The British media has fed every excuse as to why england are out of the Euro cup or going to be out of it , from forgein players , to Hiddink and Abramobitch. They know how to strike a nerve dont they ? Is it coincidence or what ?

Israel manager Dror Kashtan paid a remarkable tribute to opposite number Guus Hiddink last night, revealing the Russia coach is revered as a hero in Tel Aviv for the way his parents helped Jews during the Second World War.

The Israel team must earn at least a point at the Ramat Gan Stadium tonight against Hiddink's side in order to send England into their final group game at home to Croatia on Wednesday with any chance of reaching next summer's Euro 2008 finals.

While Israel keeper Dudu Aouate warned England not to expect any special favours, Kashtan said: 'Russia are led by one of the great coaches in the world and we all have a warm place in our heart for him because of what his family did during the Holocaust.

'It's a fact in history what they did. And the people who helped the Jews during the hard times are special to us.'

Hiddink's parents have been awarded honorary degrees by the Yad Vashem Institute in Tel Aviv in recognition of the compassion they showed towards persecuted Jews.

His father, Gerrit, for example, stole food vouchers to feed fleeing Jews in his home village. He also used to rescue injured Allied pilots and carry them to medical stations on his bicycle.

As Hiddink and his players arrived in Israel from warm weather training in Cyprus, it became clear Kashtan would love to see him succeed. Kashtan added: 'His name goes before him as a coach. He has had an amazing career at club and national level. He is a household name and immensely respected.' Israel's chances of holding Russia appear

slim, especially after experienced defender Shimon Gershon joined Yossi Benayoun on the injury list. It will be an inexperienced line-up, with seven of the 11 likely starters having just 21 caps between them.

Russia will also enjoy the benefits of newlylaid pitch.

The pristine surface has replaced the one England played on during their 0-0 draw, although Israeli officials denied reports in Russia suggesting Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich had paid £340,000 to finance the re-laying work. Keeper Aouate insisted England only have themselves to blame for their predicament.

'People are trying to add more spice and more colour to this game,' he said.

'It is clear the English don't trust us. But they had their future in their hands and let it all go.

'We'll be trying to beat Russia as we would if we were playing England or anybody else. I am a professional and will do my job for my country.'

Anyway, don't count England out just yet. Israel is leading with a goal in the 10th minute.

        Erm....don't forget about

the Fat Lady; she sings at the 90th minute or a few minutes later. In the meantime, Alberman and the rest of the Israelites are playing a fantastic game.

Israel 2-1 Russia: Golan gets England out of jail

            PA

England were thrown a Euro 2008 lifeline in Tel Aviv as Israel overcame Russia to leave Steve McClaren's men requiring just a draw against Croatia to qualify.

Dorel Golan's stoppage-time winner, just seconds after Dmitri Sychev had struck a post with a shot which looked destined to send England out, must have raised the roof not only off the Ramat Gan Stadium in Tel Aviv but the Grove Hotel in Watford, where McClaren was watching on, accompanied by his coaching staff.

McClaren must have been shredding his fingernails as, for 29 long minutes, Israel resisted their increasingly-desperate vistors after Diniyar Biyaletdinov had levelled Elianiv Barda's early effort.

Yet it appeared all the hard work would be wasted when Sychev broke through.

Amazingly, the Russian's seemingly goalbound shot bounced off the outside of the Israeli post. And, as they poured forward looking for a winner, the visitors were caught with the perfect sucker punch as Golan scored the goal which could mean so much to McClaren.

With star strikers Michael Owen and Wayne Rooney both missing through injury, plus skipper John Terry and Rio Ferdinand, who is suspended, holding Croatia, who have not lost during their Group E campaign and hammered England in Zagreb 13 months ago, is by no means automatic.

However, with Croatia now through thanks to Russia's failure tonight, McClaren will hope they lack the desire his own side must show if they are to make the most of such an unexpected reprieve.

There are times when it has appeared McClaren has been cursed as England manager.

In Russia last month, McClaren's men saw a winning position crumble completely on the back of an awful penalty decision when a foul by Wayne Rooney was shown to be well outside the area.

The subsequent loss of Rooney to a freak training ground accident only increased McClaren's misery, his nightmare compounded by the thigh strain Michael Owen picked up in Austria last night which means he will miss the Croatia game.

A consistent theme during a difficult week has been McClaren's belief that Wembley clash will be make-or-break.

Instead of remaining within the bosom of his family in the north-east, McClaren chose to watch events unfold with his team of coaches at their Watford base, desperately hoping his prediction came true but equally aware it could be his own version of the Last Supper.

Yet it seemed his prayers were going to be answered when Elianiv Barda flicked Israel into a 10th-minute lead.

At the time, Russia seemed disabled by nerves, unable to stem the flow of Israeli attacks.

It would have been no surprise and in no way unjust had the hosts doubled their lead, although the closest they came was when Barak Itzhaki and Barda failed by inches to convert Maor Bar Bazaglo's outswinging free-kick to the far post.

But, as soon as the second-half began, it was obvious Hiddink had prompted a revolution in belief.

Suddenly, it was Russia on top and creating all the chances.

Although Dudu Aouate stood firm for a while, it was only a matter of time before the visitors levelled.

The equaliser was a fine example of team play, with four men involved on the edge of the area before Andrei Arshavin rolled a pass into the path of Biyaletdinov which invited the finish.

Israel were now on the retreat and McClaren must have had his head in his hands as he watched Dmitri Sychev flash a 20-yard shot just wide.

Another shot from Sychev followed, along with yet more Russian pressure.

Indeed, throughout the final half hour, Israel mustered just one chance, with Gal Alberman's flick just off target.

But, in a gut-wrenching finale, Sychev came so close to knocking England out before Golan finished Russia off.

We should be happy that England have a chance to go through. It seems as if many would not want to see England go through. The thing is, if they start putting restrictions on the amount of foreigners teams can have, then it would affectt our players as well.

It seems as if England is only willing to make those changes if they think the excess of foreigners in their clubs is really affecting their football. I think they are not too eager to put in changes either as it is the foreigners which is making the EPL the most popular and most watched league over the world.

                Absolutely!

I have personal reasons for being happy for England. But that aside, I agree with X that England will try to find/fabricate reasons if their senior team is having qualification troubles. Israel has saved the day for England and quite possibly the careers of many foreigners who are looking to gain contracts on English soil. However, the foreigners will always be the fallguys if the 3-Lions fail.

Scapegoats of the Empire is the title of a book by Australian Second Boer War soldier Lieutenant George Witton [1874-1942]. Originally published in 1907, it is the only surviving eyewitness account of the events of the famous Breaker Morant case, in which members of a British irregular unit, the Bushveldt Carbineers were arrested and court-martialed by the British Army for allegedly murdering Boer prisoners of war. Three Australian soldiers, Harry 'Breaker' Morant, Peter Handcock, and Witton himself were sentenced to death; Morant and Handcock were subsequently shot by firing squad but Witton's sentence was commuted to life imprisonment and he was later pardoned.

Witton's book was long unavailable and prior to its reprint in 1982 by the Australian publishing house Angus & Robertson, it is believed that only seven copies of the book survived in various Australian state libraries and in the possession of Witton's family. Although unsubstantiated, it has long been claimed that the book was suppressed by the Australian government and most copies were destroyed; another explanation is that most of the copies were destroyed by an accidental fire at the publisher's warehouse.

Witton's main assertion, as indicated by the book's provocative title, is that he, Morant, and Handcock were scapegoated by the British authorities in South Africa—that they were made to take the blame for widespread British war crimes against the Boers, and that the trial and executions were carried out by the British for political reasons, partly to cover up a controversial and secret "no prisoners" policy promulgated by Lord Kitchener, and partly to appease the Boer government over the killing of Boer prisoners, in order to facilitate a peace treaty.

Witton also claims that many of the accusations about them, which led to their arrest and trial, were made by disaffected members of their regiment whose rebellious behaviour had been suppressed by Morant and Handcock.

Allegedly an embittered Witton did not rush to enlist in World War I.
