Portmore United ............. 0<P class=StoryText align=justify>August Town put in a spirited performance at the Barbican playing field to hold former champions Portmore United to a scoreless draw in their Wray & Nephew National Premier League (NPL) encounter yesterday.<P class=StoryText align=justify>The result gave both teams their first point of the season. August Town went down 2-0 to Waterhouse last week, while Portmore suffered an identical defeat at the hands of Seba United.<P class=StoryText align=justify>After looking jaded in their first game, Portmore, with Anthony Modeste back in central defence, looked a more organised unit this time around and wasted no time in launching their attacks.<P class=StoryText align=justify>The game was only a minute old when Jesus Hernandez, one of two Colombian nationals in the Portmore team, sent a curling free kick wide of the target.<P class=StoryText align=justify>The response from August Town was almost immediate. For a moment, one thought that the woeful defending exhibited by Portmore last week had returned. A looping ball from Tafari Oconnor bypassed their midfield and caught the defenders napping. However, Rohan Palmer's shot from inside the area was blocked.<P class=StoryText align=justify>August Town should have taken the lead in the seventh minute, but David Stultz, after dismissing two opposing defenders, appeared to have found himself in a state of consternation and was dispossessed of the ball.<P class=StoryText align=justify>With Steven Morrissey having tremendous difficulty adapting to the game at this level, (Ridiculous statement. Morrisey has already proven he belongs from last year.)and Onandi Lowe showing that the only thing he brought to the game to remind the spectators of his old days, (X will have to deal with this statement.) was his incessant appealing and complaining to the referee, August Town defenders, led by their ageless skipper, David Laylor, looked composed.<P class=StoryText align=justify>Portmore never threatened for most of the first half, until just before the break when Garth Boota's thunderous freekick almost broke the crossbar, with the 'keeper well beaten.<P class=StoryText align=justify>The second half started with August Town showing signs of going for the three points, and again should have scored their first goal at this level in the 58th minute, but Ross Burton failed to convert after having Shawn Sawyers alone to beat.<P class=StoryText align=justify>An astonishing save in the dying moments from August Town's custodian Devon Haughton denied Portmore the chance of leaving the complex with all the points. He went full stretch to parry a well-taken shot from Fredy Parada - Portmore's other Colombian - for a corner.<P class=StoryText align=justify>Portmore's coach Paul Young said that yesterday's performance was a better effort than last week's, although his team should have put away some of their chances.
