<P class=StoryText align=justify>INCUMBENT Stewart Stephenson defeated Rudolph Speid 52-39 in the presidential election of the powerful Kingston & St Andrew Football Association (KSAFA) yesterday at the HEART Trust headquarters in New Kingston.<TABLE cellSpacing=0 cellPadding=5 width=120 align=left border=0><TBODY><TR><TD></TD></TR><TR><TD><SPAN class=Description>STEPHENSON... we'll focus on working closer with the clubs</SPAN></TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE><P class=StoryText align=justify>Ninety-one of the 92 delegates from 42 clubs and four affiliates comprising preparatory, masters, whole life ministries and business house competitions voted in the biennial election, which saw Stephenson given his fourth mandate after having served terms between 1996 and 2000, and between 2004 and 2006.<P class=StoryText align=justify>"This second leg of our four-year journey will see us focusing on the things that maybe means a lot more to the clubs, which is working closer with our clubs," Stephenson told the Sunday Observer minutes after the votes were counted.<P class=StoryText align=justify>"I think the programme to get us on the website and get our registration process computerised will bring greater integrity to the process of registering and transferring players.
"One of the things that has to be appreciated... is that without funding you can't drive football in this country, and that is why we had to place priority on seeking sponsorship funds (2004-2006), because once the Association is viable and in good financial standing, then you can do the many other things," he said.<P class=StoryText align=justify>"... I want to promise the clubs... that this time around the focus will be primarily on working closer with them - particularly the weak ones that need infrastructural help. But of course we're going to continue our work in building our competitions in ensuring that the young players in our confederation have an opportunity to get exposed and get the opportunity to represent Jamaica," Stephenson added.<P class=StoryText align=justify>Prior to yesterday's election, Speid told the Sunday Observer that: "There is some lack of succession planning going on and that is where we also think that while not changing the team as a whole that runs KSAFA, there should be some rotation of positions based on different people performance over the year."<P class=StoryText align=justify>Following yesterday's election, Speid - who is also the treasurer of the Jamaica Football Federation (JFF) - when asked if he would support Stephenson, said "I don't support Mr Stephenson, I support football, so I will still be around football and make my contribution."<P class=StoryText align=justify>Meanwhile Speid was re-elected KSAFA treasurer yesterday after beating Brian Rose, 51-37. Second vice-president Carlton 'Spanner' Dennis was also re-elected after beating Godfrey Lothian, 56-30.<P class=StoryText align=justify>Carvel Stewart was returned as first vice-president after challenger Stephen Bell withdrew his candidacy.
David Hunt was returned as general secretary, with Jerome Spencer as his assistant, and Dennis Lawrence was also returned as assistant treasurer.
