MONTEGO BAY, St James — Seba United continued their solid early season form with a 3-2 win over Village United at Jarrett Park on Wednesday gave them sole leadership of the Cash Plus Premier League.
Despite finishing with 10 players for the second straight game, the Theodore Whitmorecoached Seba improved their tally to 10 — one more than defending champions Harbour View, with Waterhouse and Portmore both on eight points.
A first-half penalty from Norman Foster had given the home team the lead at the half-time break, while Delroy Ellis’ 59th-minute strike doubled the lead.
Last-placed Village stormed back to draw level through Kemar Mills in the 65th and Fabian Dawkins in the 72nd before substitute Donovan Peart sealed the points for Seba in the 79th minute.
Despite being on different ends of the results, both coaches complained about the officiating, but were satisfied with how their players performed but think they can do much more.
According to Whitmore, who once again kept himself on the bench, “Three points are always good, but we’ve been getting some bad officiating since the other day, but I guess it’s a part of the game.”
A second-half red card to Ricardo Geddes was tough for Seba, Whitmore said, as he thought both teams “were playing hard”.
The former Jamaican international said his team was still making mental mistakes which led to the “two soft goals again… the defenders were caught sleeping and it’s something we’ve been talking about all season”.
Kendale Mercury, who took over at Village three matches into the season, described the loss as “very hard”, adding that “sometimes we don’t get the best of the officials, but I’m not
complaining as we took something out of the game”.
While Mercury was happy with the comeback after falling behind 2-0 with 18 minutes to time, he bemoaned the lack of concentration that led to their fourth straight defeat since their opening round draw with Tivoli.
Ellis raced the length of the Village 14 minutes into the second half to punch the ball past Village goalkeeper Kemar Llewellyn, and Daniel Ricketts almost made it 3-0 four minutes later, but his shot from outside the sixyard box close to the touch line hit both uprights on its way across the area.
Village, who had scored three goals in four matches up to Wednesday, hit back with two goals in a sevenminute span, during which Seba lost a player.
Kemar Mills beat goalkeeper Gavine Barrett with a low-glancing header in the 65th minute and Dawkins drew the Trelawny team level in the 72nd when he caught the Seba defender napping and raced away to slot home.
In between, Seba’s Geddes was sent off by referee Dwight Royal after picking up his second yellow card in a five-minute span. Five minutes after replacing Ellis, Peart popped up in the right place to scramble home a rebound from Llewellyn to seal the points for the home team.
Teams: Seba United — Gavine Barrett, Seian McNish, Keneil Moodie, Anthowe Dawkins, Wilfred Smith, Delroy Ellis (Donovan Peart 74th), Norman Foster, Daniel Ricketts (Kemar James-75th), Stephen Forrest, Ricardo Geddes, Mario Samuels (Stephen Irving 60th) Subs not used: O Steele, T Whitmore, S Anderson, A Morris Booked: Dawkins 64th, Geddes 64th Ejected: Geddes 69th Village United — Emile Thomas, Cordel Simpson, Troy Smith, Oneil Robinson, Rohan Reid (Everette Mullings 71st), Andre Moore (Andre Williams 39th) (Leon Irving 55th), Fabian Dawkins, Ian McAnuff, Kemar Llewellyn, Preston Bernard, Kemar Mills Subs not used: V Barnes, O Allen, K Brown, P Smith Booked: Simpson 64th, Irving 87th Referee- Dwight Royal Assistants: Antoinette Williams, Dale Ewan Fourth Official: Ian Myles Match Commissary: Tracey Reid
