Paul Scholes has been ruled out of Manchester United's Champions League clash with Dynamo Kyiv tonight after suffering a knee injury during training at the Olympic Stadium yesterday evening. Scholes will undergo a scan to determine the extent of the problem upon his return to Manchester.
"Paul will miss tonight's match," confirmed Sir Alex Ferguson, the United manager. "He got a knee injury in training last night and he will have a scan when we get him home. It is unfortunate, but these things happen and I am sure we have enough experience to cope."
For all Ferguson's optimism, Scholes's injury is a blow to United, who are already without two experienced midfielders in Owen Hargreaves and Michael Carrick. Hargreaves, who has been plagued by a tendinitis problem since his summer move to Old Trafford, is unlikely to feature against Middlesbrough on Saturday but may be available for United's visit to Arsenal on November 3. Carrick, who dislocated his elbow against Roma earlier this month, is not due back until the end of next month.
John O'Shea, Darren Fletcher or Anderson are all available to deputise for Scholes in Kyiv, but Ferguson will none the less be hoping that the 32-year-old is not too seriously hurt. The midfielder has already been sidelined by one knee injury this term after a cartilage problem forced him to fly home from the club's pre-season tour of the far east.
