Canada & USA post wins at CONCACAF Beach Soccer Championship
14.9.06 - Canada and the USA posted wins over Mexico and Jamaica, respectively, at the 2006 CONCACAF Beach Soccer Championship (FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup 2006 – Qualifier Costa Rica) at Punta Leona in Puntarenas, Costa Rica on Thursday.
Two goals by Yuri Morales and one each from Benyam Astorga, Anthony Chimienti and Ronald Silva led the USA (2-0, 6 Points) to a 5:2 triumph over Jamaica (0-2, 0 Points) in the first match on Thursday.
"The work that we have done really showed in the two encounters we played and won," said USA’s Beach Soccer Technical Director Roberto Ceciliano. "At this moment we have six points and if you win next match then we'll have nine and secure a berth into the World Cup." In the second encounter, three goals by Ricardo Villalobos wasn’t enough for Mexico (0-1, 0 Points) as they lost a 6:4 result to Canada (1-1, 3 Points) at Punta Leona. Eric Munoz scored twice for Canada in the victory.
"We are very happy to have obtain this win today, because it is the first for this national team," said Canada’s Technical Director, Ross Onagro. "For us this is something new, and this result is because of all the effort and work done."
The 2006 CONCACAF Beach Soccer Championship continues on Friday in Puntarenas when Jamaica meets Canada at 10:00 and then Costa Rica (1-0, 3 Points) hosts Mexico at 11:00. COMPLETE SCHEDULE
The matches from 15-17 September will be televised live in Costa Rica by Teletica’s Channel 33.
The champion and runner-up from the final round standings will progress to the FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup 2006. At the conclusion of the CONCACAF event on 17 September, a draw will be conducted by CONCACAF to determine which groups the qualifiers will be placed into for the FIFA tournament.
The 16-team FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup this year is the second tournament to be held; the inaugural event took place in May 2005 at the Copacabana Beach in Rio de Janeiro.
