DOYLE ... I think Tyson wants to savour his victory from the World Championships and make that last
Paul Doyle, the track and field agent of Jamaican world 100-metre record holder Asafa Powell, is doubtful that a rematch between Powell and world champion Tyson Gay of the United States will materialise this season.
Talks of a rematch surfaced on Sunday after the 24-year-old Powell lowered his own world record of 9.77 seconds by 0.03sec to 9.74secs in heat two of two at the Rieti Grand Prix meet in Italy with a legal following wind of (1.7m/s).
"I don't think he (Gay) has much motivation to race Asafa (again), especially now. I think it's something that most likely we're going to have to look forward to seeing next year," Doyle told the BBC moments after the MVP ace returned 9.78secs to win the final (wind 0.0m/s), 1 1/4 hours after the heat.
"I think Tyson wants to savour his victory from the World Championships and make that last," Doyle said.
Just over two weeks ago on Sunday, August 26, Gay clocked 9.85secs to blow away Powell (9.96) in the World Championship final. Following a mediocre start, Gay caught the fast-starting Jamaican at about the 60-metre mark before sprinting by him to cross the finish line close to three metres ahead. Powell had to settle for third, as Derrick Atkins of the Bahamas finished strongly to take silver in a national record 9.91secs.
Doyle hinted that Gay's handlers may not be interested in a rematch.
"He (Gay) knows if he goes up against Asafa and loses, he knocks himself down a notch," Doyle said.
Sport fans around the world were eagerly anticipating a rematch between Gay and Powell, which could happen as soon as Friday at the Golden League meeting in Brussels.
However, Wilfried Meert, the organiser of the event set for the Ivo Van Damme track, has been quoted in the BBC as saying. "They are both down to compete, but whether it is in the same race, I don't yet know."
For his part, Doyle said he expected Gay to stick to the 200m.
Last week, it was reported that organisers of the Zurich Golden League meeting refused to pay Powell US$100,000 for appearance fee to face Gay in a rematch after the American had accepted US$50,000. Gay, later withdrew from the 100 sighting fatigue, but did feature in USA's winning sprint relay team that returned 38.40secs to beat Jamaica (38.82secs) minus Powell.
