Cricket coach wanted by US police Friday, 07 September 2007
Police in the United States have launched a manhunt for a Jamaican cricket coach on several sexual abuse charges.
The man being sought is 47-year-old Robert Lewis.
He is also Vice principal of the Holmwood Technical High school in Manchester.
A report on the newsday.com website says an arrest warrant has been issued for Mr. Lewis.
He has been accused of sexually assaulting a Jamaican boy who played on his team during a camping trip in Hartford, Connecticut in the US.
The police are reportedly searching for Mr. Lewis based on a complaint filed last month by a 13-year-old boy.
The teenager accused Lewis of molesting him during the second week of August in a Trinity College dormitory, in the United States.
Speaking with our news centre Friday morning, Public Information Officer for Hartford Police Department Nancy Mulroy explained the charges against the coach.
"Well the complaint was brought to our attention by the family of a juvenile who reported to his mother that he had been sexually assaulted by Coach Lewis. That was in early August when our investigation started," said Ms. Mulroy.
"On August 27th we obtained a search warrant for Mr. Lewis seeking him for charges of sexual assault to the third degree, one count; sexual assault to the fourth degree, two counts; unlawful restraint in the first degree, one count and risk of injury to a minor, two counts. We are currently looking for Mr. Lewis and hope that he hears this publicity and turn himself in to the police,"
She added that the police in Hartford have set up a phone line for persons to give information about Mr. Lewis.
"At this time we do not have knowledge of his whereabouts. Any one with information can call our anonymous hotline, Crimesolvers at area code 860 527-TIPS that's 8477," she said.
She added that the police believe Mr. Lewis, who is also the manager of Jamaica's under-15 national cricket team, is hiding out with relatives in the Bronx, New York.
The lead investigator on the case has stated that the probe could widen as investigators in Hartford are talking to former and current players coached by Mr. Lewis.
But when our news centre contacted Principal of the Holmwood Technical High school Paul Bailey Friday morning, he said Mr. Lewis, who lives on the school compound, is back in the island.
The principal added that Mr. Lewis advised him of allegations of inappropriate touching made against him by a male student.
Mr. Bailey said Mr. Lewis is on vacation leave and that the school will await the outcome of the investigation by the US authorities.
