According to an article written my Mark Stein of espn.com, the New York Knicks, who went 33-49 last season, owe the National Basketball Association $45.1 million dollars for exceeding the league's salary cap of $65.42 million. Teams must pay one dollar for every dollar over the cap.
The San Antonio Spurs, who won the NBA championship, barely exceeded the salary cap and paid just more than $196,000.
Five teams exceeded the cap and paid the tax.
New York Knicks $45.1 million
Dallas Mavericks 7.2 million
Denver Nuggets 2.0 million
Minnesota Timberwolves 998,536
San Antonio Spurs 196,082
The other 25 teams who did not exceed the limit will recive 1/30 of the tax amount, about $1.9 million per team.
