  • Are we destroying C. Taylor @ 16 ?

Jamaica’s 16-year-old 400-metre prodigy Christopher Taylor of Calabar High is set to mix it up with the big boys at the National Senior Championships, with an eye on making Jamaica’s team to the Rio Olympics in August.

Taylor, who won’t be 17 until October 1, is a late entry for the 400m ‘A’ race at the Racers Grand Prix on Saturday.

"It therefore is useless and pointless, unless it is for share malice and victimisation to arrest and charge a 92-year-old man for such a simple offence. There is nothing morally wrong with this man smoking a spliff; the only thing wrong is that it is still on the law books," said Chevannes.

No I don't think so. If his handlers manage the expectations, which based on coach Clarke's comments, carefully, then I don't see a problem. He is a prodigy in his sport and he is not being challenged by his peers, so why not put him up against older competitors. Kirami James was another prodigy who became a professional while still a teen and now he is at the top of his event. If a student is too bright for his class then he's allowed to skip grades.

Agreed. What usually mash them up is overwork and training that a growing body is not ready for yet.

This is just throwing him in the deep and and seeing how far he can swim.

We will never know until 3 years down the road.

Taylor is very good and I trust the coach knows what he is doing, but it is a whole lot of races for a youngster.

how many matches per year do the 15 and 16 year olds in a professional football club play? How many hours of training and travelling cross country to various meets, does a 16 year old gymnast or swimmer preparing for the Olympics put in?

You (all) know that what destroys athletes is most often

mental breakdown and not physical breakdown?

The athlete that is destroyed mentally has superb physical condition but usually finds it hard to get his body to obey the command to perform at optimum current ability. Often that athlete ends his event not winded (nuh bus fulla energy) but unable to put out necessary effort as 'brain' just cannot will the body/ 'feel' the will to 'put out'.

Usually happens when the athlete loses that anxiety to do well! ...bored?

                            Just lost the drive!
"Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has."
