  • First ever day-night Test cricket match

Somehow I missed the news on this major cricket development. Certainly a good idea in the attempt to give Test cricket a chance to survive, although I suspect more will be needed.

It is almost certainly too late to save Test cricket in the West Indies, but perhaps a few more innovations such as this will help with this classic form of the game among other international teams.

    The start of something big

I didn't read the article, but some have been critical of this match; of this "experiment" being done at the highest level, i.e. test match, rather than say in a first class match(es) before it becomes adopted.

Some issues raised are the pink ball, whether it will stand up and how the dew or dampness will affect play, after dark.

Personally, it's been way too long in coming for as far as I'm concerned advantages and disadvantages will even out over five days... and it will definitely make the game more available to the masses.

As I understand it they used the pink ball in a few Sheffield Shield matches over the last two years. Doesn't seem like it was more than a half-dozen or so matches though.

I was surprised how much of a controversy the pink ball was. At first I thought it was just visibility but upon reading more apparently the ability to shine and swing it are also concerns because of the way it has to be manufactured to make it pink. Based on the reports from this first day/night Test match there were no major issues, but it is just one test on one cricket ground so I guess we will see how it goes from here.

I watched it and it was great! The dew at night was a factor but is par for the game. It will mess with players body clock though

How so? Until what time did they play?

I believe they started at 2pm local time so they probably played until about 9:30pm.

              About 9/10 pm.

A day/night ODI or T20 is one day. This is five days on the trot to sleep and rest patterns have to be adjusted to optimize performsce at 10 pm for 5 days straight
