...that 1952 final leg runner was not Arthur Wint. Arthur was our starter. George Rhoden, winner of the 400 flat, was our final leg runner. In the unfortunate 1948 final run the order was Wint to Laing to Rhoden to Herb McKenley. The 1952 run was Wint to Laing to Herb to Rhoden. Even

    Aside: 1952 - Wint won 800 silver, Rhoden won 400 Gold and Herb 100 & 400 silver

Exactly what I said weeks ago right here…ONE meter at a time. And in case you doubt, I saw the interview with Herb (decades ago) saying he recalled what his coach told him to do…dont try to do it all at once and blow up, one step at a time. Herb overtook and handed a meter ahead and the anchor maintained that for GOLD.

This should be in the DNA of EVERY CBar athlete.

plus herb was a superior runner to all except one of the 32. similarly, in the 400 he lost out on the gold both ways .... going out fast and making a late surge.

Ask yourself…of the both times where he lost the flat 400m gold, which was more valiant? The first where he was run down as prey (flapping his hands like McCrory)or the 2nd where he was predator and they used a foot-finish to deny him victory?

But the flat and relay are 2 different things, no? Everybody start off at the same time...

...and Herb's opposition was in his class?
                          That is apples to oranges!
...Herb was the former World Record holder! Relatively speaking his opponent was not listed in the class of Javon Francis' opponents on the respective World's 400M ranking chart.

Herb was faster than his opponent by than 12 meters...more like 20 meters faster!

All of the runners who defeated Francis got the baton before him but most importantly two were all faster and one .04 slower over the flat than he was.

Beside the 400M tells a tale.

                          http://www.iaaf.org/competitions/iaa...t#resultheader

That 'having recently run faster than Francis' gave the psychological edge to each who defeated him. They knew they had his ticket...and did not surrender either psychologically or factually!!! They got to the line before him.

Francis was not in the 1 & 2 runners class on flat times and not even .50 better than the man who piped him for 3rd. In fact that Briton ran faster than Francis in the at least one round of the flat. How far behind each did he receive the baton?

Uuunuh waan tek man fi ediat!

What you left out is Herb destroyed (others) on relay legs using both strategies. You have one relay leg whereon his late surge=good 'maintaining' had him pass his opponent (who could be seen dying...literally dying in the last 70...50 meters) and suddenly that becomes the 'best way' to run a relay leg (...from behind)? You sir, lay claim to being logical.
