This is a rather interesting ongoing discussion, both differing opinions are plausible, and there is no way to tell with certainity either way, hence the search for established facts.Francis knows the limits of his body more than anyone else,he would have to had ran the fastest leg of his life to get a medal and that he did.We can all agree it was impossible for him to win, well how about placing second with better tactical acumen?
What we know is he would have certainly won a medal if he rceived the baton sooner.
No he does not! That is why his flat event is relatively poor!
Also, it not about Beijing, its about learning for Rio!!!!
In Rio, he will likely get the baton in a much better position and there I want him to be as tactically astute as possible, as we WILL have a shot of gold then!

I don't hear him saying the youth ran a perfect race, so yes there must be something to learn and improve. What Clarke is saying is that he did not run a BAD race as some are saying he did. By NO standard is that split relative to everyone else a bad or even an average run.
He is also correct in saying that the 2013 run, lauded by all, was basically the same race plan.
Sum tings:
- Was this Francis' fastest run for this season? ...best ever split this season?
- Was this Francis' fastest life-time run? ...best ever split?
- Was his run fastest split in the relay? ...i.e. did the young man perform best of all those top world runners on basis of time recorded of split?
- Now the 400M race when maximum effort is expended can have you finishing like a train (='maintaining' better than all around you) or hanging on...but...when you put down your best run it is simply...your fastest run, is your fastest run!
Logic suggests that young man, Mr. Francis, all the other runners performing as they did would end up exactly where he did. There would be a difference in how he finished - as he did or finishing like a train! So how would we wish to take that 4th place? Him dying as he did or finishing like a train? If he finished like a train, the result would not have changed but the arguments would. It would then be, he left it too late! Inexperience but he will learn! ...and some would add their silly . Boy stupid eeennnhhhh!
Fact is, Mr. Francis was magnificent!!!

Just think on this?
Why no mention of our 3rd place runner who tried the same so-called "madness and folly" as Francis???!!!
