In interviews throughout these championships, athletes and staff repeatedly referenced the inexperience of many of its 130 team members, some of whom came to Beijing for their first global meet.
“The combination of traveling halfway across the world with the conditions and the greatest competition in the world can be a daunting experience,” said Terrence Mahon, coach of the U.S. middle and long-distance women.
