‘Fanna’ shows why he is one of the best

    BY OBSERVER RACING WRITER
    Sunday, November 24, 2013

JOCKEY Winston ‘Fanna’ Griffiths turned back the years in a demonstration of pure riding class as he partnered Kipling Weekend to a fabulous win in the feature race — the Gladiator Trophy over seven furlongs at Caymanas Park yesterday.

After leading from the off, Griffiths who has ridden more winners than any other rider in the history of racing in Jamaica, but who is rarely seen on a racing programme these days, allowed his threeyear-old rival Willie Goldsmith to take over coming around the first bend. Griffiths was undaunted and simply waited at the top of the straight before urging Kipling Weekend to retake the lead.

While the patience of Griffiths disposed of Willie Goldsmith, there was still one hurdle to navigate in the form of Go Go Yvonne (Shamaree Muir) who was closing fast on the rails, but alas to no avail, as the wily master of the pigskin, simply kept Kipling Weekend up to her work, in the end prevailing by half a length over Go Go Yvonne with Sweet Trail third.
It was a lesson by the master to all pretenders of how to pace and when to move in a race. It was the only ride on the card for Griffiths who was warmly greeted by the fans at the Park on his return to the winners' enclosure. Kipling Weekend covered the seven furlongs in 1:25.2 minutes.
The continuation of the battle for the jockeys' championship involving champion jockey Dane Nelson and Omar Walker was subdued on the day as neither rider was able to ride a winner. Both had been listed to ride in nine of the 10 races on offer yesterday, leaving Nelson still in front by one win.
The day's co-feature, The War Zone Sprint Trophy, a Restricted Stakes race for three-year-olds venturing over 1,100 metres, turned out to be a stroll for the Wayne DaCosta-trained Trail Blazer.
The chestnut gelding, by Region of Merit-Luvable was ridden by Shane Ellis.
The next raceday is scheduled for next Wednesday.

Wow. Good to see a man still doing what he loves and doing it well after all these years.
