Bolton: Don't compare the Jamaicans with Ben Johnson

1997 World 200 meters champion Ato Boldon believes the Jamaican athletes who tested positive earlier this year cannot be compared to Ben Johnson’s drug scandal in 1988.

The Jamaican born Canadian Johnson won the 100 meters at the 1988 Olympics in Seoul Korea, posting 9.79 seconds, but was later disqualified after he tested positive for banned substance.

Jamaican Olympic gold medalists Veronica Campbell-Brown, Sherone Simpson and Asafa Powell along with three other local athletes were all found with adverse analytical findings after tests done at local meets.

However, the Trinidadian, who was speaking on BBC radio, says he does not put them in the same category.

"A lot of what you see now in terms of these mega drug busts are not as heinous as they seem. There are quite a dew athletes who got busted this year who I think by the time next year come's around we're going to say okay that was sort of a minor offense. There are some who say there is no such thing as minor offenses it's either you are cheating or not, but I don't know if I belong to that group, I know that there are certain things which are maybe a 1 on the 10 scale and there are other things which are 10..." said Boldon.

THERE IS ONLY ONE ONANDI LOWE!

"Good things come out of the garrisons" after his daughter won the 100m Gold For Jamaica.

"It therefore is useless and pointless, unless it is for share malice and victimisation to arrest and charge a 92-year-old man for such a simple offence. There is nothing morally wrong with this man smoking a spliff; the only thing wrong is that it is still on the law books," said Chevannes.

    Not Sure I Understand

I’m not sure I understand the subject line of this thread. Ato Boldon, aside from his one gaffe during the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, has been among the most positive things (particularly in the USA but elsewhere also) that could happen to Jamaican track and field!

Think back to the dark days of NBC with Carol Lewis as one of the lead commentators and you will see what I mean. Thanks to Ato and his intimate knowledge of and support for Jamaica’s track and field program and achievements, Americans and many other people now know about the existence of powerhouse clubs like MVP and Racers, and the fact that Jamaica is producing a large cadre of homegrown international stars.

Compare Ato’s depth of knowledge and accurate and positive (for Jamaica) live comments with, for example, IAAF TV’s Peter Matthews and his ridiculous statement at the start of the 2013 Moscow 100-meter finals that ALL the women at the starting line “attended colleges in the USA”!

In addition, Ato has personally encouraged his fellow American athletes to pay closer attention to Jamaica’s track and field. For example, when Lauryn Williams sat in our National Stadium during a Boys & Girls Champs (I think this was 2009), it was because Ato had persuaded her to check out Champs.

I’m sorry, but I will ALWAYS be in Ato’s corner.
