'Jerry Reid' gets G-G Achievement Award

ROCK, Trelawny — ACCLAIMED Montego Bay sports personality and community worker Jeremiah "Jerry" Reid was one of six recipients of the 2013 Governor General's award for the County of Cornwall last week.
The Governor General's Achievement Awards has been in existence since 1991. The recent presentation ceremony was the second of three such events for the year. The first was held in Middlesex and the third will be held later this month, for the county of Surrey, in

Meanwhile, Reid who is now the Institute of Sports Development Officer for the parishes of St James and Hanover, told the Observer West that the recognition for his outstanding service will give him added impetus to contribute more.
"This award only gives me the drive to continue to get more involved. There are lots of communities that need help and if I can be one such person to help or get others to help the unfortunate in these communities then I will be more than happy to assist," said Reid.
"I gratefully accept it because people who give community service do not always live to get recognised. I am happy to be one of the Governor General's awardees. I think it is very fitting at this stage of life that the committee recognised me in this form."
Since 1962, Reid, who hails from Montego Bay, has been involved in youth clubs and various groups in several St James communities.
However, he is best known as a sportsman who represented his parish team in cricket at the youth and senior levels. The wicket-keeper/ opening batsman also went on to play for Melbourne in the Senior Cup.
In 1968 he was a part of the Jamaica Colt team which played against the visiting England team which boasted legendary players such as Colin Cowdrey and Freddie Trueman.
Reid was also part of the coaching staff of the Jamaica Under-19 cricket team which beat Trinidad and Tobago to win the regional title in 1990.
But the 2013 GG awardee did not only participate in cricket. In fact, the versatile sportsman also represented Boys Club and Montego Bay Cricket Club, playing football at the youth and senior levels as a centre half. He also went on to captain the St James team during his illustrious career.
Reid has also represented his parish in table tennis and attended the national trials in that sport.
In the track and field arena, the sports administrator has been champion of Jamaica and the Caribbean Senior Citizens 50 and 100 metres dash for the past five years.
Other Governor General awardees in the County of Cornwall were: James Carman Wright of Hanover, Irvin George Green of Westmoreland, Lennox Paul Napier of Trelawny as well as William James Benjamin and Jodykay Maxwell of St Elizabeth.
