Sunday's first race was a humdinger. Top-notch rider Winston Griffiths on Alyssa's Call and leading apprentice Shamaree Muir on Audre's Blessing were locked in a stirring battle in the final furlong of the 1820 metres event. It was a classic case of the young and inexperienced (Muir) against the old and experienced (Griffiths). Close video analysis of the finish gave clear indications that Muir has patterned his riding style on that of Griffiths. Both riders were fanning away with rapidity, with the younger man finally prevailing by a short head. It was really something to watch the two riders at work. If indeed Muir has patterned Griffiths' style, he has made a wise choice. The true test of Muir's riding ability will be tested when he loses his apprentice claiming. For now we congratulate him on his development.
