Triple world champion Tyson Gay, who failed a drugs test last month, tested positive for a banned steroid.
The American sprinter has failed at least two tests, the most recent at his national trials, and withdrew voluntarily from the World Championships in Moscow that took place last week and could be facing a two-year ban.
A letter seen by the BBC, said: 'Using the Carbon Isotope Ratio Analysis it reported that the sample had an adverse analytical finding reflecting values that are consistent with the administration of a steroid of exogenous [external] nature.'
Possible two-year ban: Tyson Gay's failed test was for a banned steroid
The letter then says that this kind of positive test for an 'anabolic agent' would violate the code of the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA).
Carbon Isotope Analysis, also known as an IRMS test, can detect banned steroids in the blood, including testosterone or androstenedione.
The length of ban for a positive steroid test is currently two years, although this is rising to four in 2015.
Usada refused to comment on whether Gay had tested positive for a steroid.
Historic: Gay is the joint second fastest sprinter of all-time, with a run of 9.69 seconds
He has been provisionally suspended by the United States Anti-Doping Agency (USADA), and speaking last month he said: 'I basically put my trust in someone and was let down. I know exactly what went on, but I can't discuss it right now.
'I hope I am able to run again, but I will take whatever punishment I get like a man.'
Gay won the 100m, 200m and 4x100m relay at the 2007 World Championships in Osaka, but has never won an Olympic gold medal.
If he was given a two-year ban, it would take him to the age of 33, older than any of the 2012 Olympic 100m finalists.
Out of the medals: Gay finished fourth in the 100m Olympic final in London
