THERE IS ONLY ONE ONANDI LOWE!

"Good things come out of the garrisons" after his daughter won the 100m Gold For Jamaica.

"It therefore is useless and pointless, unless it is for share malice and victimisation to arrest and charge a 92-year-old man for such a simple offence. There is nothing morally wrong with this man smoking a spliff; the only thing wrong is that it is still on the law books," said Chevannes.

So does he run in the potential WR 4x100 relay and risk the whole team getting dqd? Even if he runs in the rounds.

FLA fires warning shot - Trouble awaits gun owners who fail to renew licences
                  Published: Sunday | August 11, 2013 1 Comment

                  Tyrone Reid, Senior Staff Reporter

Come September, more than 2000 delinquent gun owners in Jamaica may find themselves in trouble with the law and be arrested for illegal possession of a firearm because they have failed to renew their licences.

Chief executive officer of the Firearm Licensing Authority (FLA), Dr Kenroy Wedderburn, says starting next month it will be spearheading an initiative in collaboration with the police that will be designed to target gun owners who fail to renew their licence each year.

"The police can lock you up," warned Wedderburn, as he urged gun owners to correct the breach.

"An important note is that the FLA will soon initiate a drive to revoke licences for which renewals have not been done. By law, if the firearm licence expires and the firearm holder is in possession of the firearm - then it is an illegal possession.

"People have left firearms at police stations for two years and then retrieved them. Some have left firearms at stations for 10 years and have not gone to retrieve them," Wedderburn explained.

The FLA boss said the authority will no longer turn a blind eye, and gun owners who have failed to renew will be caught squarely in its cross hairs.

"They have to do that, (renew) because we are going on a drive soon to either confiscate or to revoke those licences," stressed Wedderburn.

                  'Serious move'

He added: "It is a serious move. We are planning as we speak, and we will be starting by the latest, September. We are making the announcement now, giving them some time and then make the move. We are all set to make the move."

Wedderburn revealed that FLA officers have been given the power of a special constable and will be able to make arrests if necessary.

"Phase one of that process has already started because some of our officers have been designated as special constables but we will still use the assistance of the police in this initiative," he explained, while pointing out that the main reason for the special constable designation was for the FLA officers to be able to legally transport firearms from one location to the next.

The FLA head pointed out that in the old system, under the Jamaica Constabulary Force, firearm holders were accustomed to leaving their firearm(s) at police stations without completing the annual renewal stipulated by the law.

"The authority wishes to advise the public that the practice of leaving the firearm(s) at police stations and not completing the annual renewal process is illegal," the FLA noted in a written response to The Sunday Gleaner.

The FLA also stated that firearms holders have the option of disposing of firearm licence(s) if they do not wish to keep the firearm any longer.

However, all outstanding taxes must be paid before disposal of licence(s) will be approved, the FLA said.

Additionally, the gun control body said that firearm holders who miss three consecutive renewals must undergo the authority's late renewal process which includes, but is not limited to, the firearm holder being fingerprinted and an investigation being conducted.

Meanwhile, the authority also revealed that it has nearly 700 approval/denial packages to be collected by applicants who it is unable to contact.
