  • Moscow Drug Testing: Your View?

It seems to be a comprehensive move, and maybe not necessarily targeting only Jamaican athletes?? I quite frankly don’t know, and so cannot give a meaningful personal comment, but I would really welcome your views. So, forum readers might want to take a look at the following article (the boldface emphasis in the opening sentence is mine):

Major anti-doping checks at Moscow world championships

A health educator takes a blood sample in Washington DC. The World Athletics Championships in Moscow will feature the "most comprehensive anti-doping programme in the history of the 30-year-old event", according to track and field's governing body, the IAAF.

AFP - The World Athletics Championships in Moscow will feature the "most comprehensive anti-doping programme in the history of the 30-year-old event", according to track and field's governing body, the IAAF.

The credibility of the sport has again been questioned following positive drugs tests of two of the best-ever male sprinters, American Tyson Gay and Jamaican Asafa Powell, respectively the second and fourth fastest men of all time.

But the IAAF vowed Monday that its anti-doping strategy for the world championships would be far-reaching and continue the work of two months of out-of-competition testing.

It will involve "large-scale pre-competition blood tests implemented for an athlete's biological passport".

"This was first carried out at the 2011 world championships in Daegu a few days before the event. This will be done on site at the athletes' hotels in Moscow," the IAAF said.

"If any athletes show any abnormal blood values then the IAAF will carry out a follow-up urine test. This will allow the testers the possibility to detect for substances such as EPO."

The IAAF added that in-competition urine tests would be carried out for the top three finishers in each event immediately after the race.
"In addition, some athletes will be tested by a random draw and some target testing will be done. A total of between 450-500 urine tests will be carried out during the championships," the body said, acknowledging that this type of testing was more of a deterrent "to protect the integrity of the competition".

Curious? Can anyone put costs on this?

Number of athletes and cost per test?
    Thanks!

        Targeting?

        What would be considered 'targeting'?
        ...testing for 'no reason'?
        ...testing because of past acts?
...testing/keeping an 'eye' on because of reasonable suspicion?

        ...singled out for testing, period?

        Can there be fair targeting?
        ...or is targeting inherently unfair?

...what holds on testing of athletes from other countries?
...how does testing of our Jamaica athletes compare? ...like for like i.e. equal country v country? ...or equally for like country v like country? ...or 'elite athlete' v 'elite athlete'? ...hell...like for like athlete v athlete?

If they are testing the whole Jamaican team then all the teams should be tested. None should be excluded.

That is discrimination at the worst if only a few countries or Jamaica is subjected to this kind of behavior.

Jamaica need to stand up especially will Conte(a drug convict) having the bully pulprit against Jamaica which maybe the lead they are following.

I bet there is no plan for pushing back. I have no problem with the testing but with discrimination. You see Conte and other pushing all over in the media. We want a proactive local body who can represent themselves and call out these cheats parading as savior to the sport.

Well we will suffer, all Jamaica needs to do Jaaa, clubs and all stake holders is educate the public on our test, a distinction must be made on the classification of drugs which athletes were caught with stimulants, pain killers - narcoanalgesics and steriods, distinction must be made as to location of individual camps and base, i.e. local and forgein.

This painting all with one brush will see the media divide and rule us, The Jaaa must lead

also the Jamaican testing bodies need to stand up and be vocal not only to the athletes but when others are unjustly treated with this broad brush as if all Jamaican athletes are cheats.

you see their credibility is been attacked. The need to stand up. It is claimed that it is been covered and systematic doping. They need to stand up.

When you are been falsely accused in major publication, you don't just take it lying down. They have all right to respond in a formal and informative way.

These lies eventually get in people's mind if consistently print. They need to set the record straight.
