Troubling days in the history of modern track and field
    Monday, July 15, 2013

EVEN as Jamaicans received word of the country's best-ever performance at the World Youth Athletics Championships, comes the staggering news that several Jamaican athletes, including Olympic medallists Mr Asafa Powell and Ms Sherone Simpson, have tested positive for banned substances.
Details related to those adverse analytical results were only just emerging as this commentary was being written. What is clear, however, is that following on an adverse finding on Mrs Veronica Campbell Brown a month ago, the credibility of Jamaica's track and field programme is now open to question.

Of course, it's not just Jamaican athletics that's in trouble. News which coincidentally broke yesterday that the great American sprinter Mr Tyson Gay has also tested positive means USA athletics, and indeed, global athletics have their backs to the wall.
It may not be stretching the point to say that yesterday will go down as among the more troubling days in the history of modern track and field.

It is troubling fi true, this is a huge blow for athletics when the likes of Gay and Powell are failing drug tests. These are 2 guys that are looked upon worldwide as standard bearers. My first reaction is one of shock when i heard the news, don't know the ins and outs of the cases, however i would be very disappointed if these guys set out to cheat. The more likely explanation would be the taking of supliments that contain something on the banned list. I pray that is the case!!

The drug monitoring regime is way too sensitive now to the point of being out of control. They have gone overboard in response to the previous scandals

Athletes are now permanently tarnished for incidental or accidental presence of relatively innocuous substances... many of which have either zero or negative impact on performance. So called precursors, masking agents etc...which exist, undeclared in off the shelf products
