Heather Augustyn, who wrote the Ska: An Oral History book, recently finished a book just focusing on the life and genius that was the original Skatalite trombonist Don Drummond. The book, Don Drummond: The Genius and Tragedy of the World’s Greatest Trombonist, from talking with Heather a little bit, will dive as deep as possible into the unquestionable genius and creativity but yet tragic tale of the greatest Jamaican trombonist to ever live and his girlfriend and muse, the Rhumba Queen Anita “Marguerita” Mahfood.
She has meticulously researched the life of Don, by speaking to as many musicians who actually performed with him, close friends and family and even Former Jamaican Prime Minister P.J Patterson who served as Drummond’s defense attorney. Through the interviews she was able to weave together a better understanding of his life from his youth as a poor barefoot boy running around Kingston to the height of his talent playing with The Skatalites, meeting the rhumba queen known as Margarita and his ultimate losing battle with the mental illness that plagued his life.
I asked Heather why she chose to focus on Drummond for her follow up? She had this to say:
“I’ve always loved Don Drummond’s music–who doesn’t, and have been fascinated with his story. But as an investigative journalist, I wanted to find out what was fact and what was myth, and what wasn’t known at all.”
She posts update to her Facebook group so check there for updates.
Don Drummond: The Genius and Tragendy of the World’s Greatest Trombonist By Heather Augustyn with a foreword by Jazz Trombonist, Composer, and Producer Delfeayo Marsalis is due out in the Spring.
And here it is – THE MAN IN THE STREET!
