World leading win for T&T's Baptiste
PORT-OF-SPAIN, Trinidad (CMC):Impressive results, led by Kelly-Ann Baptiste and Keston Bledman, highlighted the penultimate day of the Trinidad and Tobago National Track and Field Championships at the Hasely Crawford Stadium yesterday.
Baptiste ran a world leading and personal best of 10.83 seconds to book a ticket to the IAAF World Championships in Athletics in Moscow, Russia, in August.
The 2011 World Championship bronze medallist blasted away from the start and pulled away from her competitors midway to the finish line as she eclipsed her previous national mark of 10.84 set three years ago.
Michelle-Lee Ahye also qualified for the women's dash with her second-place finish of 11.06 with Semoy Hackett, third in 11.30.
Hackett was cleared to compete after failing a doping test at the 2012 National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Championships for a banned stimulant. She was given a provisional suspension by a disciplinary panel of Trinidad and Tobago's national track and field governing body. That suspension was lifted in May and she awaits a decision from the International Association of Athletics Federations.
edged out
Meanwhile, Bledman equalled his previous best of 9.86 seconds when he won the men's version in a highly anticipated event to wrap up the penultimate day of competition.
However, his mark was wind aided (+3.2m/s). All top-three finishers dipped below 10 seconds with Richard Thompson (9.91) and Rondel Sorrillo (9.99).
Earlier, Mikel Thomas edged out Wayne Davis II to successfully defend his 110 m hurdles national title in 13.29 (+3.0). Davis II, who won the NCAA title for Texas A&M two weekends ago, was second in 13.30.
Deon Lendore, also of Texas A&M, upset a talented field of local quarter-milers to take the victory in 45.29 seconds. Jarrin Solomon (45.34) and Renny Quow (45.65) completed the top-three spots.
Olympic bronze medallist Lalonde Gordon took the fourth position in 45.67.
