  • Bolt a great athlete... Not a great man

Not sure if you saw this article.
Bolt ... a great athlete, but he is not yet a great man.

    By Richard Ho Lung

OFTEN I have said money is the end of our modern Jamaica and our world. It is no longer the search for truth or the good of humanity. I have met some of the most beautiful and honourable people in our island, mostly of the older generation, who are not wealthy but have maintained dignity, honour and respect for all people, and who would not disgrace themselves for money.

Too much pride, praise and popularity, too much money, too much fame have been given to Usain Bolt, with the usual Jamaican attitude, 'boys will be boys'. Racing around in a BMW, twice Bolt has had serious accidents with this expensive 'toy.'

We say we must excuse him, he is just a kid having fun. We want to protect him, no matter what. He is so talented. He is so unusual. But what of chastisement, strong counselling and prudent advice? If he is a kid, why isn't he being formed and shaped and guided by the coach, by counsellors, and even the press?

Spoiling Bolt is part of the national psyche which would never have been in the past, but today, all that glitters is gold, rather than the opposite.

    Walk humbly

If we want Bolt to be a great man, we would want him to walk humbly before God and man. To be a great athlete and to be a great man are two different matters. An athlete has great talent. A great man has a noble character. An athlete is less than a great man, a great man is forever, he forms a new generation of people who are strong. They endure all things and times, they live with integrity, and by principle. Never forgetting others but always sacrificing himself for others, he is a stranger to this world.

Some day Bolt's records will be broken. Already he has been beaten before the nation in the 100m and the 200m. The attitude is that he is just warming up for the Olympics. This seems unacceptable to me; if you are running before your entire nation, you provide your best. It's a way of honouring people, the roots from which we all came.

The matter of being a legend and proclaiming oneself as being a legend is very much lacking humility, and creates false values in our nation. Muhammad Ali is perhaps the greatest of boxers ever, and today he can hardly articulate a sentence of proper English. Whitney Houston is now dead; she had the most beautiful of voices. Same for Princess Diana, a mother and a woman of great beauty, dead in a crash early in the morning with an extraordinarily rich man, after wining and dining.

Mr Bolt would not be chastised by us, much like the way we treat our own children; we love them and spoil them to death. We give them all they want, especially whatever they want materially. We kill them with kindness. We forget that: "God chastiseth those whom He loves."

Mr Bolt is a great athlete, but he is not yet a great man. When he works hard and practises over many years under sage adults, when he realises and acknowledges that all he has comes from God, and that he should not proclaim himself a legend, then one day he would begin to attain wisdom. Bolt was accustomed to giving thanks to God for his victories. I pray that he continues to do so.

After all, wisdom is attained at 50 years, not at 25, and the most valuable gift a man can have is that he has sacrificed himself in service of God and his people.

As for Mr Yohan Blake. Why call yourself a beast? Read the Book of Revelation. I wish you both success in the upcoming Olympics.

Hi Ms. P. Long time ... can we sing the song, "Welcome Back!"

Father Ho Lung just wanted to put out his feelers to see if he could grab some of the spotlight.

It’s wonderful seeing Portia surface on this forum once again! Her presence was definitely missed!

I still sometimes think about the good ‘ol days when Portia and the other two wonderful ladies, Karen and Princess, posted here regularly. All three ladies added a definite and welcome balance to discussions here whenever logic and commonsense went missing from the discourse of our men.

                  Back to the original post:

Bolt needs to sit at the feet of elders like Fr. HoLung.

I agree with some of the article. I think the Father, though, should be careful not to be too idealistic with his thoughts. From a remote perspective, we can agree that Bolt has gone over the top. But we must also understand that we are not in heaven and Bolt is human. Who can tell whether the good Father, if he could run like Bolt, wouldnt also be a little over the top?

For Bolt, I hope he has some folks around him who he will listen to, and who will speak to him objectively about relishing his success but balancing it with grace.

                        Indeed! Nicely said, Westman.

                        But is it too late?

He has a lifetime ahead of him to be a great man. Don't buy into the hype. There will be a lot of good causes to be involved once he is out of the sport. Right now all he has to be is a decent and honest person. I don't know that Bolt can live to many of the expectatation at age 25 but he has certainly put some effort into it and I hope he will grow more as a person, but he has retirement for that.

I dont think it is ever too late to "come around" in life. We may delay decisions past the optimal time and a lot that cannot be undone may happen before we "come around." Even with one's dying breath, when one cant change anything, one might still be able to acknowledge that another path could have been taken.

You know I am very proud of Usain. However, many times I have cringed at some things he has done or said. It is no different than how most parents feel about their kids who they love dearly. I discussed this subject two years ago with one of my father's friends, who is a Director General in the Govt in Ja. I was stunned at how lenient she was regarding many elements of Bolt's behavior. I thought she was all proper and very serious. As I often do with folks who I disagree with, I reflected on what she said and I lightened up. I realized that Bolt is young and is very youthful. He catapulted into the lime light from humble beginnings. Unlike many pro-athletes, he didnt start out with an agent who could give him the equivalent of "finishing/protocol school." I also realized that even when most people are trained to handle huge moments and success, they still perform less than ideally. It is one thing to observe remotely and quite another to walk in the shoes of sudden and overwhelming success and adulation.

With all that said, I still see in Usain many of the great qualities we both saw in him when I introduced you to him at the Penn Relays many years ago while he was a mere junior. If I could only find those photos.

I lifted my hat to Bolt when during an interview, the national anthem for a country was being played...he pointed this out to the journalist--and both paused in respect of the anthem.

                              This was very classy.
