USA Track & Field is working to determine a manner to decide the third-place finisher from Saturday's women's 100m dash at the U.S. Track & Field Trials in Eugene, Ore., with a spot on the U.S. Olympic Team on the line. Jeneba Tarmoh and Allyson Felix both finished tied for third at 11.07, with Tarmoh finishing with a .001 advantage of 11.068 to 11.069. USATF officials have declared the third-place finish a dead heat, however, and are determining how to select a winner, as there is no official tiebreaker policy.

Carmelita Jeter took first place in the women's 100m dash at the 2012 U.S. Track and Field Trials in Eugene, Ore. on Saturday night. Jeter's 10.92 was .04 of a second better than second-place finisher Tianna Madison, who finished at 10.96.

Wait, wait a minute, did this article just say that tarmoh had a time of11.068 and Felix a time of 11.069. It seems we have a third place based on time!!! this is insanity, there is a clear 3rd place based on time assigned. Wow see something new every now and then!!!

              2. If neither athlete declines their position, they will be given the option to determine the tie-breaker via coin toss or by run-off.

              a. If both athletes choose the same option, that option will be utilized as the tie-breaker.

              b. If the athletes disagree on the tie-breaker, the tie will be broken by a run-off.

              c. If both athletes refuse to declare a preference regarding the method between a run off and coin toss in regards to how the tie is broken, the tie will be broken by coin toss.

Having an official-sounding name with capital letters, writing an official-looking press release and holding an official-sounding news conference to announce a new “procedure’’ is not actually enough to count as leadership.

                It is not necessarily governing.

But USA Track and Field, the sport’s official “governing’’ body formed committees and met for a day to figure out what they’re going to do to break the tie between Allyson Felix and Jeneba Tarmoh in the US Olympic trials 100 meter dash.

The result? They’re going to let Felix and Tarmoh decide how to break it, whether to have a runoff or a coin flip. Keep in mind, this is for the final spot in the 100 meters on the U.S. Olympic team.

A coin flip. You have got to be kidding. Talk about cowardly buck-passing. What kind of governing body of a sport just leaves it up to the athletes?

In other news, Manny Pacquiao and Timothy Bradley will get to decide whether to have a rematch or let heads or tails decide who is the champ.

“They could have let them decide by wrestling in Jell-O,’’ said Justin Gatlin, who had just won the men’s 100 meters at the trials. “That would be OK.’’

If would have been just as good as a coin flip.

This is a bad look for track and field. It might just be simple weak knees from the USATF. But it’s hard to shake the feeling that it isn’t something different.

Corporate interests and Nike and NBC and agents have too much pull in this sport. Felix is the darling of the US track team — unless it’s Lolo Jones. Big-dollar, powerful sponsors and networks have a lot invested in Felix’s success. She is one of the big sales pitches for the Olympics. In Eugene, you see her face on the side of a bus with the words referring to her 200-meter hopes: “From Eugene to London in 22 seconds.’’

Tarmoh is an unknown, though she is sponsored by Nike, too. Let’s just say that Felix is not going to be swallowed up by this. Tarmoh might be.

Give this to USATF: They are making it look as if they’re shooting for fairness. But do you have faith that that’s what Tarmoh is really getting?

Because there isn't a tiebreaker procedure on the books, the only fair choice is for USATF to force a runoff.

One of the big stories coming into the trials was that Felix was going to try to qualify in the Olympics not only in the 200 meters but also in the 100.

In the final Saturday, the top three would make the Olympic team in the 100. When it was over, Tarmoh had finished third, .001 seconds ahead of Felix. She was handed a flag to wave to the crowd. She talked about the honor of beating someone as great as Felix. Felix said that she was happy for her teammate but that it hurt.

Hours later, the USATF announced that the race had been changed to a dead heat. Officials had looked at the photos of the finish. One camera was obscured by arms and bodies, officials said. The other showed a dead heat.

Credit the USATF for immediately posting that shot on its website, usatf.org. But it never posted the other picture. Why?

And this new procedure has some strange things in it. For example, the choice between runoff and coin flip was actually the second step. The first tiebreaker is this:

“If either athlete declines his or her position on the National Team/Olympic Team, that athlete will be named the alternate and the other athlete will assume the final available position.’’

Huh? If Felix or Tarmoh don’t want to be on the team running 100 meters, than one of them can just step aside and let the other one have it.

Call me suspicious, but this seems like a nod to Nike and to Felix’s sponsors: Make Tarmoh an offer.

Maybe the most stunning thing is that after all these years, USATF didn’t have anything in the rulebook about how to break a tie.

If the athletes don’t agree on whether to run or flip, then they have to run. And there is more negotiating to be done on that. Both runners are in the 200 meters in the trials, which run Thursday through Saturday.

One of the reasons Felix chose the 100 as her second event, and not the 400, was that she thought it would be less draining on her as she prepared for the 200, her signature event. Adding an extra 100 before the 200, then, would not appeal to her.

Felix and Tarmoh are training partners, both coached by Bob Kersee, who thinks they should have a runoff next Sunday.

Gatlin said he would choose a coin flip, that a one-on-one, head-to-head 100-meter sprint for an Olympic spot would be too much pressure.

Maybe so, but NBC would sure love it. The other big question, most likely, is this: What does Felix want?
