  • Cruelty to a child - last minute kick out

Students who don't meet the requirement should not complete but we must ask if STETHS never knew of any requirements problem until the last minute? How does the process work? Should the requirements should be met at the time of registration or the day before Champs start?

STETHS jumper out of 'Champs' team

MONTEGO BNAY, St James — St Elizabeth Technical High School's (STETHS) Peta-Gay Reid, last year's Class One high jumper gold medallist at the ISSA/GraceKennedy Boys' and Girls' Athletic Championships has been ruled ineligible for this year championships that gets underway tomorrow at the National Stadium.

Keith Wellington, principal of STETHS confirmed the news to the Observer on Saturday night, and while not going into details as to the reasons said the school would be sticking to its principles of abiding by the rules and bylaws of ISSA.

Reid, who was seeking her fourth straight high jump gold medal after winning twice in Class Two, had contributed 15 of STETHS' 63 points won last year after also winning the bronze in the Class One long jump with a best jump of 5.70m.
The former Penn Relays champion and defending CARIFTA Games Under-20 champion has also run for 4x100m and Medley Relay teams in the past.
Meanwhile, the Observer has learned that Reid is not the only athlete from the St Elizabeth based institution who was ruled ineligible this year as at least one more athlete who was a finalists last year, has been barred from taking part as well.
Milton Brown, head of the girls programme at STETHS, said that while Reid's points and leadership would be missed, it was hoped that this set back would serve as a "wake up call" for the younger athletes in the programme.
Reid, who has represented the island at the CARIFTA, IAAF World Youths, Central American Juniors and Pan-Am Junior level, is one of the top college prospects and has attracted the attention of several top American schools.

What cruelty? How long were they aware of the rules/regulations?

Why not go into details? what's the big secret? it would be instructive for all to understand what the issue is; the writer should do some more homework and buss it pon wi... unless there is something involved that could violate the student's right to privacy, in which case that should also be stated.

Her DOB is listed as March 14, 1993, which makes her 19 years & 14 days!

Hmm, what are the age rules? When is age calculated, at the start of the school year, i.e. September 1st?

This sounds likes a grades or attendance issue.

I have no clue on how the age is calculated.

Must be poor academic performance. The coach stated that he hopes that this set back will serve as a wake up call for the younger athletes.

So if she is struggling academically, then how can she be 'one of the top college prospects and has attracted the attention of several top American schools.' Ahhh bwoy.

.... it could also be attendance but if I had to guess, I would not guess attendance A great Champs 2011 star (a female) had to stay in Jamaica because of grades.
