DHAKA, Bangladesh (CMC):
Chris Gayle topped the list of 12 [COLOR=blue !important][COLOR=blue !important]West [COLOR=blue !important]Indies[/COLOR] players that have been signed to play in the inaugural Bangladesh Twenty20 Premier League next month.[/COLOR]
The big-hitting opener, whose career has been put on ice due to his long-running dispute with the West Indies Cricket Board, was pipped for the highest price by Pakistan all-rounder Shahid Afridi for the tournament.
Afridi was sold for US$700,000 to the Dhaka Gladiators and Gayle went for $551,000 to the Barisal Burners.
West Indies players did well for themselves in the auction with Marlon Samuels, whose batting during the team's recent series there was outstanding, fetching a price of US$360,000 for the Duronto Rajshadi.
Big hitter reputation
This was above Kieron Pollard, whose reputation as a big hitter has also been in high demand in T20 tournaments globally. The T&T all-rounder was picked up by the Gladiators for US$300,000.
His compatriot and fellow all-rounder Dwayne Bravo went to the Chittagong Kings for US$150,000.
There were a few surprising choices among the Caribbean imported list, with heavily maligned West Indies captain Darren Sammy fetching a price of US$55,000 for the Sylhet Royals.
Fast bowler Jerome Taylor has not played any serious [COLOR=blue !important][COLOR=blue !important]cricket[/COLOR] for the last year, but the Kings picked him up for US$50,000, along with T&T all-rounder Kevon Cooper for US$25,000.[/COLOR]
The Khulan Royal Brengals claimed durable batsman Shivnarine Chanderpaul for US$25,000, although his opportunities in the shorter version of [COLOR=blue !important][COLOR=blue !important]the [COLOR=blue !important]game[/COLOR][/COLOR] have been few this past year.[/COLOR]
The other Caribbean imports picked up in the auction were all-rounder André Russell (US$85,000), fast bowler Fidel Edwards (US$60,000) and all-rounder Dwayne Smith (US$50,000) for the Khulan Royal Brengals, along with opener [COLOR=blue !important][COLOR=blue !important]Lendl [COLOR=blue !important]Simmons[/COLOR][/COLOR] (US$25,000) for the Chittagong Kings.[/COLOR]

Gladiators, professionals or slaves? Which is it? Some years ago..Charles Barkley said the NBA palyers were like Gadiators in the ring fighting.....and got a lot of flak for it...isn't professional sport much like that? Win and you live, lose or play badly and you 'die'....or get less or none of the pie. The Windies Board continue to try to deny Chris Gayle...luckily, it's not like footbal where you have to play national games to qualify for contracts..

how do they get paid... does it mean gayle would receive what he was picked up for... or does it mean that he will have to negotiate a contract separately...

The question is: " who gets the money?" From what I heard on the Sportsmax zone, Wavell Hinds to be precise, what happens is the home board of the player gets a percentage (apprx 10%). In Gayle's case I don't know if they are collecting anything as he is not contracted to the WICB... and they would be hypocrites to take the money if (as the de facto home board) they could.

The rest of the money is split between the player and his agent if he has one.

That's what I heard him (Hinds) say. He was speaking of the IPL when he addressed the issue.

Gayle signs two-year deal with Royal Challengers Bangalore

MUMBAI, India (CMC) — Estranged West Indies batsman Chris Gayle inked a new deal yesterday with Bangalore Royal Challengers (RCB) for the next two seasons of the Indian Premier League.

Media reports indicated that Gayle is set to earn US$500,000 (J$43 million) under the deal.

Gayle was part of the Kolkata Knight Riders for the first three seasons of the lucrative tournament, but he went unsold in last year's players' auction.
This proved to be a slice of good fortune for RCB and Gayle. He later joined the franchise as an injury replacement player for Australian left-arm fast bowler Dirk Nannes.

Gayle went on to become the highest scorer in last year's IPL and won the Orange Cap as well. He also played for Royal Challengers in the Champions League Twenty20, leading the side to the final, where they lost to the Mumbai Indians.
"We are delighted to make Chris Gayle a permanent member of our IPL squad," said Siddhartha Mallya, director of Royal Challengers Sports Pvt Ltd, in a media release.
"He is one of the best batsmen in the world. His form helped us qualify for the final of the 2011 edition of the tournament."
"We are confident that with players like him in our side, we will take the extra step this season, and win our maiden IPL title."
Gayle said he was happy to be back at his home away from home.
"I had a great time representing RCB last year," he said. "It is a terrific outfit. The players are brilliant.
"They are complemented by the support-staff and administrators, all of whom have gone out of their way to make the players comfortable, and give them the freedom to express themselves on the field. To me, Bangalore has been a home away from home."
IPL chairman Rajiv Shukla said Gayle adds a lot of value to the tournament with his explosive batting.
"Chris Gayle is one of those cricketers who was born to excel in all formats of the sport," he said.
"He was at his destructive best in IPL 2011, and one can safely assume that we will see a lot more fireworks emanate from his blade in the forthcoming IPL seasons."
Gayle has not played for West Indies since last year's World Cup on the Asian sub-continent, following a long-running dispute with the West Indies Cricket Board over controversial remakes he made in an interview with a radio station in his native Jamaica.

Meantime, a leading Indian firm announced that Gayle will be brand ambassador for its line of whiskey.
Gayle also signed a deal to be brand ambassador for Whyte & Mackay whiskey of Vijay Mallya's UB Group, which also owns RCB.

Well, his pension fund will certainly be richer than what the WICB has to offer. He might as well feather his nest as the impasse with the WICB looks like there is no solution on the horizon.
