  • Sebastian Coe says Bolt is "The Muhammed Ali of Athletics"

I say no and never, not even close!

Usain Bolt 'The Muhammad Ali Of Athletics,' Says Former Middle Distance Runner Seb Coe

LONDON -- Calling sprinter Usain Bolt "the Muhammad Ali of athletics," Sebastian Coe predicts the Jamaican will steal the show again at next year's London Olympics.

Coe, the former middle-distance running great, heads the organizing committee of the 2012 Games. He was in Daegu, South Korea, for the world championships where Bolt won the 200 meters and anchored Jamaica to a world record in the 4x100 relay.

Coe says in his column in The Daily Telegraph "there really is an Ali-like aura about this guy that is now transcending all sports."

Coe says "all things being equal, he'll be the iconic figure of our games."

Bolt won the 100 and 200 at the 2008 Beijing Olympics in world record times.

    Why you say that Scaly?

If all goes well in London next year Bolt will become the most well known Jamaican in history, at least for a while.

    Yes I said it.

No I say, I love Bolt and wish him nothing but the best and sucess but Ali he is not....He is will never face what Ali faced as a black man who spoke his mind and went against the system.

He has some charisma but nothing like Ali...two different people.
Matter of fact even Pele faced more obstacles.

Well if you are talking about personal obstacles thats a different thing. I agree that he does not have as compelling a life story.

I think what Coe meant was the way he has become bigger than the sport, bringing in fans who were never interested in T&F.

So what about his Beijing accomplishments? Just a ask....

His performance in Beijing was spectacular. It might not even be matched in London in terms of athletic accomplishment, but he was more or less unknown outside of T&F going into those games. This time is different. he will go into the Olympics as the STAR of the games.

I met a guy the other day who it turns out is a PUMA Sales Rep in the US. He can't wait for next year!

Long term I don't expect him to be bigger than Bob and certainly not as influential.

Short term I think he will be more recognizable than Bob if he isn't already, just due to the nature of communication technology today, and the reality that Bolt already is a celebrity in China (pop. 1.3 billion) while Bob never was.

Rubbish! Seb Coe needs to go do his home work on who Ali was and still is.

I am yet to see Bolt stand up for any cause except the right to keep partying and making lots of money for himself.

Ali was a real ambassador and some one who gave of himself to the point of going to prison for his beliefs, Bolt not there yet

Tell you what, the raw material that they were getting to build the statue to Simoes and Tappa and all of those undeserving wretches should be brought together and build a fitting tribute to Bolt...where would we put it though?
