FOUR defending champions led by double World Record holder Usain Bolt were yesterday named in a strong 50-member team to represent Jamaica at the 13th IAAF World Championships of Athletics in Daegu, South Korea, set to start on August 27.
The team is made up of an equal split of 25 males and females.
Bolt, who will defend his titles in the men's 100m and 200m; Shelly-Ann Fraser Pryce, the women's 100m champion; Brigitte Foster Hylton the 100m hurdles champion and the 400m hurdles champion Melaine Walker were all named in the team released by the Jamaica Athletics Administrative Association (JAAA) late yesterday, less than an hour after the Central European midnight deadline (5:00pm Jamaica time).
Four other athletes who won other individual medals in Berlin in 2009 are on the team. They are Kerron Stewart, Shericka Williams, Veronican Campbell Brown and Asafa Powell.
Maurice Wilson, who was earlier named head coach, said he was pleased with the make-up of the team. "This is a good blend of youngsters and experienced athletes, and this will ensure a seamless transition down the road and they will fill the gaps when the older athletes have chosen to move on," he said.
The man who led Jamaica's team to the Commonwealth Games in India last year said he was expecting the team to equal or surpass the 13 medals (seven gold, four silver and two bronze) won in 2009 in Berlin.
"I think we can get more than 13 medals, I won't say what colour, but once everything goes well we can surpass the total," he told the Observer.
The team was selected mostly from results from the JAAA/Supreme Ventures National Senior Trials held June 23-26 with at least one athlete, 400m hurdler Isa Phillips only securing his berth after running a season best 48.94 seconds, the fastest by a Jamaican this season, at a low-key meeting in Mannheim, Germany on Saturday.
Philips had placed fifth at the National Trials and now joins Leford Green and Josef Robertson and takes the place of Roxroy Cato, who was third at Trials but failed to get the required A standard.
As expected there was no place for sprinter Steve Mullings who is battling doping charges and who will have his B sample tested today at a lab in Montreal, Canada.
Mullings, the third fastest man this season with a personal best 9.80 seconds and who won the 200m and was third in the 100m at the Trials, was replaced by Marvin Anderson and Nesta Carter, respectively, both of whom had finished fourth at Trials.
Three Jamaicans will go into the meet as World leaders -- Powell and Bolt in the 100m and 200m, respectively, and Kaliese Spence in the women's 400m hurdles with 52.79 seconds, while former 100m champion Campbell-Brown is second in the 100m behind American Carmelita Jeter and fourth in the 200m.
The team also includes a number of first timers including Jura Levy, who will contest the individual 100m; Schillonie Calvert; Ristananna Tracey; Indira Spence who is competing at the World University Games in China; Yohan Blake who missed his chance in 2009 due to a drug suspension; Nickel Ashmeade; Mario Forsythe; Andrew Riley; Damar Forbes; Dexter Lee and Riker Hylton.
Jamaica won 13 medals, the best tally ever, at the most recent staging in Berlin two years ago.
Wilson will be joined by Fitzalbert Coleman (technical leader), while Edward Hector, Michael Clarke, Bertland Cameron, Lennox Graham and Maurice Westney will complete the coaching staff.
Team:
Male — Usain Bolt, Asafa Powell, Michael Frater, Yohan Blake, Nesta Carter, Marvin Anderson, Lansford Spence, Nickel Ashmeade, Mario Forsythe, Dwight Thomas, Richard Phillips, Isa Phillips, Jermaine Gonzales, Josef Robertson, Andrew Riley, Allodin Fothergill, Maurice Smith, Dorian Scott, Damar Forbes, Wilbert Walker, Jason Morgan, Leford Green, Dexter Lee, DeWayne Barrett, Riker Hylton.
