Jamaica's team of Roger Lyn and Dimitri Bird won the inaugural Central American and the Caribbean 12 and under team championship at the Complejo Polideportivo in San Salvador, El Salvador.
The young Jamaican team, chaperoned by Lisa Chin, defeated Guatemala 2-1 at the weekend.
At the No. 1 singles position, Lyn easily defeated Christopher Ortiz 4-0, 4-0. At the No. 2 singles position, Bird came back from a set down against Kevin Hernandez to win 2-4, 5-3, 4-2. Bird was undefeated throughout the competition. Having already won both singles matches, the doubles loss against Hernandez and Ortiz did not affect their overall result.
The Jamaicans dominated the competition as they were undefeated with wins over Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic, Costa Rica and Cuba leading up to the final.
The performance of both Lyn and Bird was topped only by their sportsmanship. In an unexpected gesture, Lyn showed the spirit of a true champion, by generously giving his prize of three Wilson BLX Racquets and bag to the No. 1 seed from Cuba, Denilso Martinez Hernandez. The Cuban team had been playing the entire event using old, damaged racquets, and Lyn's gift will go a long way in assisting Hernandez.
