Coaches anxious over delay in naming Junior teams

BY PAUL A REID Observer Writer
    Friday, June 17, 2011

A number of coaches have expressed some amount of anxiety over the delay in the announcing of the Jamaican teams to the IAAF World Youth Championships and the Pan-Am Junior Track and Field Championships set for July.
Speaking to the Observer under condition of anonymity, the coaches said the delay in naming the teams could affect the performance of the athletes.
The selection committee of the JAAA met on Monday evening, 24 hours after the two-day JAAA/Supreme ventures National Junior Trials and named the team and it was expected to be ratified, then released by Tuesday afternoon.
When contacted on Wednesday, JAAA president Howard Aries confirmed that the team to the IAAF World Youths Championships had been selected, but there were some issues still to be worked out and promised the list would be made public as soon as possible.
Earlier, the Observer had been told that the list would have been published on the JAAA's website.
However, up to yesterday afternoon, the team was yet to be released and the coaches say this could hamper some of the athletes.
"The delay (in naming the teams) cannot be good for those athletes who did not win their events convincingly and are on the bubble, so to speak," one coach told the Observer yesterday.
Echoing the sentiments of several other coaches who were contacted, he said it was difficult for the athletes to continue training, especially while sitting exams when they don't know if they are on the team or not.
One coach spoke about the cost of athletes going to training sometimes twice a day without knowing whether or not they will be selected.
The coaches also said the team for the Pan-Am Juniors to be held in Florida should be named as well, given that it will be held late July and those athletes should know whether to continue training or not.
There were also concerns that naming the team now would give the JAAA time to arrange visa interviews for those athletes who would need those document to travel to Florida.
