A gold mine - MoBay Sports Complex gets good reviews
BY PAUL A REID Observer West Writer
    Thursday, May 12, 2011

CATHERINE HALL, St James — PRESIDENT of the North American, Central American and Caribbean track and field association (NACAC), Neville 'Teddy' McCook has described the Montego Bay Sports Complex as a "gold mine" and says the directors must find ways to see how best it can be utilised.

Speaking to the Observer West on the final day of the 40th LIME Carifta Games over the Easter weekend, McCook — the former president of the Jamaica Amateur Athletics Association (JAAA) — had high praise for the facility that was completed and officially opened last year.

He said the complex "has been very receptive and accommodating and our athletes have responded by providing a tremendous performance".
The directors of the venue, he said, "should realise they are sitting on a gold mine and that we should look ahead and see how best we can bring more events in this particular area and utilise this facility".
There was a part for NACAC and the JAAA to play in this regard and with the focus on getting more events in the region, facilities such as the Montego Bay Sports Complex will see their fair share, he suggested.
"The marketing director from the International Association of Athletics Federations was here (Sunday) and he spoke at our meeting and they are looking at how best they can bring additional meets to our region and we are prepared to look at this place and to ensure we play our part," McCook said.
Highly regarded track and field official Esther Maynard of Barbados, the top technical delegate at the three-day event, said taking the championships to Montego Bay was a good idea.
"The facility is nice and it has a lot of working room," she said.
There were shortcomings related to logistics and communication during the Carifta Games, but Maynard was tolerant.
"Obviously it is a new facility, so some of the things you are working through wouldn't have been needed before and in any situation, the level of Internet connectivity would not automatically be here in a facility of this size but we were able to pull things together," Maynard said.
This year, the 8,000-seat stadium has hosted several international events including the CONCACAF Under-17 final that saw four teams qualifying for the World Cup to be held later this year in Mexico, as well as a football international between Jamaica and Venezuela.
