The folly of leaving out Gayle is evident

The simple reason why Chris Gayle was not considered by any of the franchises for their teams was that the West Indies team was scheduled to play Pakistan in a one-day and Test series a few days after the IPL started and that meant that Gayle and other West Indian players would not be available to play a majority of the IPL games.

Since the IPL rules allow only four players to play in the eleven and a maximum of ten to be signed by any franchise it did not make sense to block a place. It was better to take someone who would be available to play most if not all the IPL matches. Gayle is now in India because the West Indies selectors in their infinite wisdom did not think he was good enough to be picked for their one-day team.

Chargers can pull off upset win against CSK: White

Since Gayle does not have a contract with the West Indies board, he accepted an offer from the Royal Challengers when Dirk Nannes was ruled out of the tournament and has made an immediate impact with the bat, scoring a breathtaking century against his old team Kolkata Knight Riders.

Whether it was lack of communication between the West Indian cricket authorities or not, the fact is that a professional cricketer has to earn a living and if he cannot do so because he is not being selected for his national team, then he is going to look at other offers that will help him earn a living. With the West Indies having lost all the three one-dayers played so far and its batting folding pathetically, the folly of leaving one of the most destructive of opening batsman as well as a crafty off-spinner is evident.

Funnily the West Indies board has allowed Dwayne Bravo to play in the IPL and miss the Test series that follows the five match one-day series against Pakistan and that does show a confusion in thinking. Do the West Indian authorities not consider Test cricket important enough for Dwayne Bravo to stay or are they sure that Bravo is only a limited overs specialist and not a long format player? Players get blamed when they have to choose club over country but what when the authorities themselves aren't too sure which should take priority?

When Gayle reached England two days before a Test match and opined frankly that he didnt think Test matches were special anymore, all hell broke loose and he was pilloried by the old establishment . That the West Indies lost the Test and Gayle himself did not contribute much just added fuel to the fire. What will the old powers say now that Bravo is allowed to play in the IPL instead of a Test series or is it that the Tests against Pakistan don't matter and only Tests against England do?

    IPL Cartoons

The Pakistanis had made short work of the West Indies in the quarter-finals of the World Cup and they continue to dominate the Caribbean guys in the one-day format and have won the one-day series already even though there are two games still left to play.

Ahmad Shehzad has been the man in form and when the visitors were in some trouble in the third game, the experienced Misbah-ul-Haq came to their rescue and helped Pakistan post a win and seal the series. Mohd Hafeez also has batted and bowled well but it is Ahmed Shehzad with his century effort in the first one dayer who is the CEAT international cricketer of the week.

"It therefore is useless and pointless, unless it is for share malice and victimisation to arrest and charge a 92-year-old man for such a simple offence. There is nothing morally wrong with this man smoking a spliff; the only thing wrong is that it is still on the law books," said Chevannes.

no i am saying if he does not accept the retainer (his choice) and is not picked for the team because he wants to explore his options...he should not whine.

an important player not having a central contract says, I want to leave at any time, so they obliged him.

He refused because some of the clauses were ...'slavelike'. Like forcing him to play CLUB cricket over IPL. Please!!

Why do we (westindians) have to be dragged in the professional world ? Why dont we have a system that facilitates our professionals to make money without it being political.
