Windies froze me out, says emotional GayleBy Paul Mitchell (AFP)–

GROS ISLET, Saint Lucia — Chris Gayle claimed Wednesday he had been frozen out by the West Indies Cricket Board and was left with no option but to choose the money-spinning IPL over national team duty.
The former captain said he was forced to accept an offer to play for the Royal Challengers Bangalore because he was not sure about his place in the West Indies team, following his axing for the opening matches of Pakistan's tour.
West Indies officials reacted angrily to Gayle's decision, and said they were less than pleased with the manner in which the he handled the situation.
They begrudgingly gave him a No Objection Certificate (NOC) to participate in the IPL.
But a few hours later Gayle blasted the WICB in a revealing radio interview from India.
He said after getting injured during the World Cup, he paid all expenses for medical treatment in Britain before returning home to Jamaica, where he took it upon himself to commence a rehabilitation programme with his personal trainer.
"A group of players were selected for a training camp in Barbados, and I never got a call, nobody spoke to me, and I decided to leave it alone," an emotional Gayle said in an hour-long interview on Jamaican radio station, KLAS Sports.
"I continued my training programme, and I came to find out via the media that a Twenty20 squad was announced, and a One-day International squad was announced, and I was stunned when I saw a big headline in the newspapers, 'Gayle, Sarwan, Chanderpaul dropped'."
Gayle said he was puzzled because no WICB official had actually called to check-up on him.
He felt the least they could have done was to call him to the training camp at the West Indies High Performance Centre in Bridgetown, and assess his fitness before making a decision about the team.
"The only communication I have had with anyone connected with the WICB was when I sent a text message to (team physio) C.J. Clark, and gave him an update about how I was doing," he said.
"I told him I was feeling good, the progress I was making, I was running, I was in the gym, and working. His only response was that he would send a fitness programme, which I did not receive until the IPL offer had presented itself."
He continued: "I wanted to get back on track as quickly as possible. I wanted to play and represent West Indies.
"This was my ultimate goal, since I did not have a contract, but I was forced into this decision because teams were picked, I was not informed about what was happening, and I did not know what the future would hold.
"The matches could be played, and other players do well, and I could still be sitting on the sidelines, so I had no other choice."
Gayle said when he requested the NOC from the WICB, there was a hive of activity, and correspondence from various officials was coming left, right, and centre.
"All of a sudden, everybody got energy, and they were trying to contact me," he said.
"As much as I wanted to play for West Indies, they left me with no choice.
"I have served West Indies for many years, but I was disrespected a lot, and I have been playing under a lot of pressure."
Pakistan will play one Twenty20, five ODIs and two Tests against West Indies during their tour which starts on Thursday.
The WICB, who said that so far a national squad had only been named for the T20 and first two ODIs, was "most disappointed" at Gayle's conduct.
"The WICB does not accept Gayle's reason for making himself unavailable but as he has already clearly made his choice and has travelled to India, the WICB does not wish to stand in his way," it said in a press release.

Chris sends a message from Eden Gardens:

Helps his team chase down 170...

      1. Scores 102 off 55
      2. Catch of the match
      3. Most sixes in the match
      4. Longest six of the IPL season so far
      5. Man of the match

      Not too shabby!

I wonder if the WICB was watching...

Chris Gayle has arrived. He smashed his way to his first IPL century, the second-fastest in this edition of the competition, and was the architect of Bangalore's victory over his former team, Kolkata. Gayle formed powerful partnerships with Tillakaratne Dilshan and Virat Kohli as Bangalore were untroubled in their chase of 172, winning by nine wickets.

The pitch was proving to be tricky for the quicks and Kolkata opted to start with a spinner after having posted 171. Yusuf Pathan, who was battling a knee niggle, opened the bowling. After three good deliveries, Yusuf strayed on the leg stump and Dilshan cashed in with four through square leg. With that, the flood gates were opened.

In the fourth over, Gayle had scored just three singles - while Dilshan had notched up 19 - when he was offered a full toss. He drove it down past the non-striker for the first of his 17 boundaries. It didn't matter what Bangalore tried after that. Jaidev Unadkat was dispatched with disdain as Gayle went down on one knee, smacking him for six over long-on. Shakib Al Hasan was tossed around like a limp ragdoll, slogged over midwicket and mowed over deep square. Yusuf was smoked through the covers. Gayle even showed a touch of deftness, playing one fine to the third man boundary.

It didn't matter who was given the ball, even though spin proved difficult to get away during the Kolkata innings. Manoj Tiwary was slapped over long-on and even mishit for six. Medium pacer Rajat Bhatia was hit for 17 runs in his second over, 16 off Gayle's bat. At the end of 12 overs, Bangalore were cruising on 123 for 1 when Dilshan was bowled by L Balaji, who controlled the swing admirably.

The Gayle force blew on though. Together with Kohli, he brought the required run rate down to less than a run a ball. Kohli was given some room to express himself too, taking advantage of full balls offered by Balaji and showing off his wrist work against Bhatia. Kohli almost had too much fun and denied Gayle a century with a boundary off the first ball of the 18th over, that left Bangalore with just two to win. He blocked out the rest of the over to make amends.

Even a wide from Iqbal Abdulla couldn't stop Gayle, who ended the innings with a smashing shot through the covers, winning the match with 11 balls to spare. Gayle, who was picked up by Bangalore as a replacement for the injured Dirk Nannes, wore a jersey with 333 - his highest Test score - on the back and made light work of a total that Kolkata should have been able to defend.

Their innings was held together by a classy 48 from captain Gautam Gambhir, patience from Jacques Kallis and a measured assault by Yusuf.
Things started disastrously for Bangalore with Zaheer Khan's first over going for 19 runs. It consisted of three wides, one of which went for four, and three boundaries, all off the bat of Kallis. Sreenath Aravind fared a little better, his first over going for 14.

Daniel Vettori rung in the changes immediately, replacing Khan with left-arm spinner Syed Mohammed. Together with Dilshan, he hauled the run rate back to reasonable 8.33 per over. Mohammed was impressive in his initial two-over spell and was rewarded for tight bowling when Haddin tried to hit him over mid-off but got an edge that Kohli collected at point.

Kallis and Gambhir batted with patience against the slower bowlers and unleashed when Khan was brought back in the 11th over. Gayle played a role in the field as well, taking the catch that sent Kallis on his way. Vettori bowled a shorter one which Kallis drove on the up towards extra cover where Gayle dived to his left and plucked the ball out of the sky.

Yusuf, batting at four, allowed himself five balls to settle before depositing a Mohammed delivery over long-on. After Gambhir was caught by Dilshan at extra cover, Yusuf unleashed. He destroyed Aravind, pulling the short one for four, smashing the full one for six and dispatching the low full toss to the boundary.

The quicks redeemed themselves a bit with Khan bowling a decent last over, mixing up slower balls and yorkers, and Aravind claiming the wicket of Yusuf, who was trying to force the ball over long off but only got it as far as Kohli

WI did pretty well without him.. dem beat Pakistan in 20/20..

WI don't need 100 off of 55 from Chris Gayle when him in the mood... we need him to be more mature and responsible in his batting..

gayle needs to remember why he does not have a wicb contract. he refused to sign in order to explore ipl options and he was not picked up. further he did not play domestic t20 so he was not eligible.

wicb is a bunch of jokers BUT chris gayle is the author of this debacle.

I think Pollard signalled his intention to play IPL T20 and made himself unavailable for the Pakistan series. The IPL teams, it appears, did not pick up Gayle for the reason that they thought that he might have made himself unavailable to them because of the Pakistan series.

In Gayle's case, when he was not picked in the IPL draft the WICB should have then locked him to some commitment, but they failed to do so.

The bottom line is players are being "forced" to make decisions based on how much money they can earn vs representing their country. Scheduling a series during the IPL will create this clash... not to mention Australia's version etc.

England and Sri Lanka have a series that overlaps the IPL season beginning May 14 so their (both SL and Eng) players who are in the IPL who would normally be in the respective squads will only miss a couple weeks of the tour
and only the first test. They scheduled the T20 and ODI after the test matches.

WICB IMO was very naive in scheduling this series...Pakistan is shut out from the IPL so they would not have cared that the series would played smack dab in the middle of the IPL season. While it can be argued that the IPL should not be a consideration in scheduling, the reality of it just cannot be ignored by governing bodies.

The question in my mind is, have they (WICB) decided whether they will consider Gayle (and Pollard) for the India series? Do you know?
