CATHERINE HALL, St James — The Local Organising Committee of the 40th CARIFTA Games to be held at the Montego Bay Sports Complex over the Easter weekend, April 23-25, is still seeking support as the event draws closer.

Neville 'Teddy' McCook, president of the North American Central American and Caribbean Athletics Association (NACAC), who assumed duties as the chairman of the LOC, told a press launch held at the Complex yesterday they were still in need of help in whatever form they could get.

He said the more sponsorship they got to run the meet, the less pressure there will be on the host country and governments.
"We welcome support from sponsors, but will continue to seek more support from major corporate entities to keep the cost of these Games in the reach of the countries and at the same time, reduce the need for support from government entities," he said.
Two entities, the Sports Development Foundation (SDF) and West Indies Alliance Insurance Company, were on hand to present cheques.
SDF chairman David Mais announced their $2.5 million support, while Marie Beckford represented West Indies Alliance.
Telecommunications company, LIME, the title sponsor, was represented by Stephen Price, vice-president of marketing (Jamaica), who announced that in addition to their $36 million sponsorship package over two years, live telecast would be available via LIME Mobile television, in addition to the other media outlets.
Price also spoke of his company's commitment the event, saying they were "cognisant of fact that CARIFTA is a significant milestone in the careers of Caribbean athletes, many of who will go on to achieve Olympic and world champ greatness afterwards".
"LIME wishes to make it abundantly clear that we are committed to foster development and will continue to cheer them on," he added.
Ali McNab, special advisor to the Minister of Sports, said Jamaica had an obligation to do whatever it could to rescue the CARIFTA Games which was critical to track and field in the region and is now an institution.
McCook said they were expecting over 600 athletes and officials from the 26 countries that were part of the CARIFTA family, all of whom will be hosted at the Games Village, the Grand Palladium hotel at Point, Hanover.
Already, confirmations had been coming in from various territories, and McCook said they were "very confident that we will put on a very successful Games, but we must do our part to ensure success".
In addition to McCook, the other members of the LOC are: Ray Harvey - competition director; technology - Leroy Cooke; finance/marketing - David Miller; protocol - Carmen Clarke; accommodation - Cathy-Rattray-Samuel; transportation - Eleanor Hussey; facilities - Mayor Charles Sinclair; ceremonies -Carmen Headley; media - Ed Barnes; medical services - Dr Marion Bullock-DuCasse; legal services - Lincoln Eatmon; secretariat - Nikki Miller; equipment - TC Campbell.
