    Missing Boys and Girls Champs

by Carole Beckford on Wednesday, March 16, 2011 at 6:42pm

Since the news has surfaced regarding the schools to miss the annual boys and girls champs, I have thought about what I think should have been the appropriate action by the Inter Secondary School Sport Association (ISSA).

I know of the stipulation regarding missing the deadline, but is it the students' fault?

There are administrators in charge of all the nine schools and they should be held accountable. I therefore would suggest to ISSA that they institute a fine system for the institution and then the school board at the next level, hand out some punishment to the principal/head of the PE department.

Boys and Girls Champs are for the young men and women and they should be allowed to participate...SPORT should always win. There is no denying that the students will miss opportunities that they will never be able to recover from and therefore the people who get paid to represent these children as administrators should be made to handle the failure on their part to create an environment for the children to excel.

We cannot allow sport to be any less an area, where accountability is not insisted upon. I do not plan to spell out the missed opportunities, but it is GREAT disservice to our youngsters when we as adults under represent our roles and responsibilities as leaders.

We may not be able to solve the situation this year, but I urge the affiliates to move a resolution for ISSA to reconsider this judgement.

      • Carole Beckford Which is why I am suggesting a look at the bye-laws for upcoming seasons. This year is done as they have the rules, but should reconsider. Schools cannot be fined under the current system, as there are no rules, but I would recommend a look at a new set of rules. 5 hours ago · LikeUnlike · 1 personLoading...

      • Leo McEwan Carole, initially, I was saying that if those are the rules, then so be it; however on further reflection, I am more inclined to agree with u. After all the hard work the athletes have put in, it is really unfair to ask them to miss the very thing for which the have been training, through no fault of theirs! I can only imagine the deleterious effect that this could very well have on these young student atletes. Let's hope the damage won't b so severe that they won't recover from it! 5 hours ago · LikeUnlike

      • Alwayne Trigga Wayne Green Second thoughts I think ISSA's action should be reversed speaking from a former high school athlete point of view. Rules are rules but I don't thing those rules are more important than the well being of our children. Some of these children ...are from troubled homes and communities and track & field is the place where they feel belonged. Opportunities are scarce in Jamaica that's the reality every high school student has to face, therefore the athletes should not be denied the chance to compete when they did nothing wrong.See More

      • Irwine Clare I wholeheartedly agree. In fact I will be sending a letter to ISSA in support of such. It is not the fault of the students who have prepared for this moment. The baby has been tossed out with the wash water.
Issa u got this wrong this rule n...eeds to NE changed.See More

      • Owen James Carole you are 100 percent correct! The schools' administrators should be held accountable. ISSA should look at the issue of ACCOUNTABILITY and act accordingly without penalizing the young people and the public. Try for a compromise! 3 hours ago · LikeUnlike

      • Mini McClure I am surprised they do not have a fine for late entries. It is the only fair solution for the students 3 hours ago · LikeUnlike

      • Clive Walters Sr. If there is a fine school will abuse that option trust me.The rule must stand! Administrators are surrogate for the future leaders. In track and field one false start the field is charge. Vere tech 1976 defending champion late entry no participation child Arrive at the airport for flight late he/she miss the flight parent fault still late... that is reality. 3 hours ago · LikeUnlike

      • Patrick A Beckford Carole, may I suggest that we start an online petition, ISSA's move shock the hell out of me, like you say punish administration, what happen to the class one athletes from the 9 school? if this is their last shot what ISSA is saying TOUGH. They know a lot of the student athletes use this as a showcase to advance themselves via the college route, opportunities otherwise they would not receive 2 hours ago · LikeUnlike · 1 personAlwayne Trigga Wayne Green likes this.

    Agree to the MAX!
The children should not have been penalised!
