JAMAICAN-BORN Canadian 400m runner Alistair Moona has been shortlisted by Athletics Canada for special attention leading up to the 2016 Rio Olympics.
Athletics Canada announced last week that a list of athletes have been identified for the Team 2016 Olympic Development Programme comprising those classified as Tier One and Two of the Rising Star and Junior squads, both key components of the road to Rio 2016.
According to a release from Athletics Canada, "Team 2016, along with the Rising Star and Junior squads, are designed to create a development pathway to the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, as well as laying the foundation for sustainable high performance success.
"Athletes enter the Olympic Development Programme in Tier Two with a minimum D standard in their respective event and can then move up in the programme. The programme places a clear emphasis on linking athletes to Canadian centres and coaches."
Moona, who is a former Herbert Morrison Technical student and close friend of two-time IAAF World Junior Championships 100m gold medallist Dexter Lee, was a finalist in the men's 400m at the recent World
Junior Championships held in Moncton, Canada.
The over six-foot runner, who set a personal best 46.54 seconds at the WJC last year, last competed in Jamaica at the Junior National Trials held at GC Foster in 2009, but had failed to make any of the national teams then.
