MONCTON, Canada — Danielle Dowie will forgo her final year at ISSA Girls Championships for the bigger challenges of the American College circuit and will join a long list of Jamaicans, who have attended and competed for the University of Texas.
The 18-year-old former Titchfield High and Wolmer's Girls' runner, who failed to make it past the first round of the 400m hurdles event at the recently concluded IAAF World Junior Championships in Moncton, Canada, says the time is right to make the big leap.

DOWIE… I am ready for the higher level of training because I am anxious to be on the world scene

"Besides grasping the opportunity, never knowing what the future holds and what can happen, I think I am ready for the next level," she told the Observer while being treated on the massage table on Sunday's final day of the championships.
"I am ready for the higher level of training because I am anxious to be on the world scene, so I want to be up there and college is the next step," she said.
She is well aware of the path she is following by going to the University of Texas and competing in the 400m hurdles, but says that tradition and history aside, Texas is still producing quality track and field athletes. "They are still among the very best and I have lots of faith in coach Bev Kearny that she can take me to the next level because she is an expert in the event."
Following in the footsteps of her track idol, world and Olympic champion Melaine Walker, is also a big plus for her. "Melaine went there so that's enough for me to want to go there as well," she said.
While in university and pursuing her goals to become a top hurdler, Dowie says getting a degree in bio-medical engineering will also hold a high priority.
She was philosophical about failing to advance to the final here, saying: "It is unfortunate that I did not make it to the final, but I am not upset or anything like that, last year was my year and this is the one championships that I did not make it to the final, so I can't complain too much."
Dowie was a silver medallist at the IAAF World Youth Championships in Italy last year and despite winning medals at Girls Champs, CARIFTA Games and the Central American and Caribbean junior Championships this season, says making the team to the World Juniors "is still the outstanding achievement for me this season, despite everything else".
Dowie will still be a junior next year and says making the team to the Pan-American Juniors and winning a medal is just one of her goals for 2011.
What are the other goals she was asked, and while flashing a smile, said: "Yes I have other goals, but I won't say yet, we will have to wait and see."
Solidarity is not a matter of well wishing, but is sharing the very same fate whether in victory or in death.

All the best Danielle, Sixth form is a nice way to have fun and build academic strengths or but it costs money.
The same type of thinking that created a problem cannot be used to solve the problem.
