    Fraser's fate hangs in balance

    Published: Friday | July 9, 2010

    Shelly-Ann Fraser. - file

    Jermaine Lannaman, Gleaner Writer
Olympic and World 100m champion Shelly-Ann Fraser is now awaiting a ruling from the Jamaica Amateur Athletic Association (JAAA) to know whether she will be able to compete for the rest of season after testing positive for a prohibited drug at an IAAF Diamond League meet in Shanghai, China, in May.

Fraser, who pulled out of a track meet in Lausanne, Switzerland, yesterday, tested positive for the drug, which is not deemed a performance-booster by the World Anti-Doping Agency, but is on its list of non-performance-enhancing substances, which each athlete must declare if he or she is taking prior to competing in a meet.

    it's that serious now?

I hope it is just this newspaper trying to sell copies.

Just do not see why our local body would want to make decisions contrary to that of the ruling world body?

Oxycodone should only be taken for extreme pain like an amputation or a traumatic injury. Since she is a big star, they gave her this strong medication which would not normally be given to an average person for her symptoms. Poorly advised....

Well they do need to follow the proper procedures and make sure everything is transparent. It would not be right to give the impression that she will be cleared before they even have the hearing.

Lets just hope that no bad mind and wickedness gets in the way of what seems to be a silly but honest mistake.

Are you a doctor or medically trained? Just asking as I had not heard about this despite many 'experts' voicing their opinions.

And if what you say is true then maybe the doctor who gave her this should be sanctioned immediately

LOL...whey yuh get that from Hortical???......amputation or traumatic injury you would give morphine or dilaudid I.M , ((synthetic heroin))......Oxycodone , percocett or Tylenol # 3 is perfectly within the scope of a tootache or back problem. You could give the latter also for chronic pain .Pain medication is prescribed based on a patients verbal determination of how severe the pain is , and they use a scale from 1-10 to determine this.

The treatment can be prescribed by any M.D that practices medicine , thats why we have an abuse of pain medication in the USA , nuff a dem check in the hospitals to get dem legal high....if dem say dem pain scale is a 100 dem a get di works.

I will add if the patient cannot verbalise his pain scale the M.D will do a visual assesment based on , facial and body movements to determine his prescribed treatment.

I have seen MDs turn young adults into dope heads because of thier perception of what thier personal pain scale is, man come in fi tootache and dem a gi dem di max, Morphine and Dilaudid.

To clamp down on this , they are going after the MDs who write these prescriptions , they have to show justification as to why they are prescribing in some cases strong pain medications for simple ailments.

Keep in mind these prescribed pain tablets go for $50 us a pop on the illegal market.
