Kingston: Fifteen-year-old Manchester High student Chanice Porter produced a shocker on Thursday’s second day of Jamaica’s High School Track & Field Championships.

In the girls’ Class Two (Under-18) long jump event, Porter, who was too young for the IAAF World Youth Championships last year, leapt a lifetime best of 6.43 metres to take gold.
She had things her way from as early as the opening jump when she recorded 6.24 metres, way ahead of her competitors. Manchester High is the past school of Sherone Simpson and Nesta Carter.
The 6.43m mark is the second best jump by anyone, senior or junior, in the world this year … only behind Jacinta Boyd of Australia with 6.47m
The second place athlete was Rochelle Farquharson of St. Elizabeth Technical, the past school of World 100m hurdles champion Brigitte Foster-Hylton, with 6.14m
Porter turns her attention to the high jump on Friday, and again, she starts as big favourite. She is expected to clear 1.85m.
