Former Olympic and World champion sprinter Justin Gatlin has warned sprint aces Usain Bolt and Tyson Gay to expect serious challenges when he returns from a four-year doping suspension this year.
“I could beat them before. I don’t see why I can’t run with them now,” Gatlin was quoted as telling Reuters.
Bolt is the current world record holder in both sprints with times of 9.58secs over the 100m and 19.19secs for the 200m, while Gay has the second fastest times ever of both the 100m and 200m.
Another man Gatlin will have to look out for is former world record holder Asafa Powell, who on his day is capable of beating anyone.
But Gatlin said: “Times don’t scare me.”
“You’ve got to respect the times, they are fast times. But I feel that if one man can do it, then the next man can do it as well.”
Gatlin tested positive in 2006 for banned male sex hormone testosterone but has denied ever knowingly taking any banned substances. He will be eligible to run again later this year.
