Karl you're correct about Seymour Newman been a wicked bowler in dem-dere-days.
I listened to a Mikey Holding interview this morning (with Ed Barnes) and Mikey chimed in that when both he and Seymour were playing U19 for Jamaica, Seymour was a couple yards faster than he was. He mentioned one particular match against Barbadoes when Seymour terrorised the Bajan top batsmen with sheer speed and accuracy.
Surprisingly, several oldsters (including Holding's coach at KC) called in to say how intelligent Holding was as a bowler and that what many people did not know was that (prior to West indies cricket) Holding was a good batsman who batted at #4 on many local teams in his junior years.
Newman, Holding said, was also an excellent track-n-field athlete and (fortunately for many batsmen) decided to take up a track scholarship in the USA. Had Newman decided to stick with cricket, the record books would be telling a different story, Holding concluded.
BTW: Although Holding was slower than Newman, Holding had the ability to bowl both inswingers and outswingers; something that most fast bowlers in the past were unable to do.
