It was a comedy of error, but the first-ever goat race at Caymanas Park last Sunday was well received by racing fans, even though the winner was disqualified.
Win, place, exacta and quinella betting was conducted on the race which was contested by 12 female goats over 100 metres straight, between the fifth and sixth races. At stake was the Camille Buchanan Trophy and a purse of $10,000 donated by CTL director and Councillor for the Gregory Park division of the St Catherine Council.
The goats were named after outstanding fillies who have graced the Caymanas Park racetrack since the era of the '60s, well-known names such as SKA, VESTIA, POORLITTLERICHGIRL, SWING BY, AWESOME POWER, DISTINCTLY NATIVE, FIRE IN YU WIRE and CLASSIQUE.
solicited much laughter
In a race which solicited much laughter from the large crowd as a result of the wayward running of the goats, each of which were harnessed to a young driver (all pre-teenagers), it went down to the wire in a bang-up finish involving four goats.
RAHTID, NO. 10, running at odds of 12-1 and guided by the young female Nevillegavil Able, was first past the post just ahead of No. 7, NAUGHTY BY NATURE with Shawndy Castillo at the helm.
However, following a lengthy stewards' inquiry, RAHTID was disqualified and placed last, her 'driver' having dropped the reins in the closing stages and first place was awarded to the 11-1 shot NAUGHTY BY NATURE who paid $440 to win.
DISTINCTLY NATIVE and AWESOME POWER, both of which passed the post third in a dead-heat, were promoted to second for $6,000 quiniella on either.
The Camille Buchanan Trophy was presented by her son, Tahjrue Reid to young Castillo, who also picked up the winner's purse of $5,000. Each participating 'rider' received $1,000 and a picnic ham, compliments of Councillor Buchanan. Included in the presentation party was Senator Arthur Williams, the minister with Pprtfolio responsibility for the racing industry. According to CTL director Chris Armond, total sales on the race was $85,000 - $70,000 in the win pool. The goats were owned by Kemar Daley and trained by Curtis Chamberlain, Jason McCarthy, Paul Noell, Roshane Douse and Dennis McCarthy.
