TROY, Trelawny - Christmas came early for the students of Troy Primary in upper Trelawny and Bryce Primary in Manchester after Olympic and World champion Veronica Campbell-Brown recently donated sporting gear to the schools.
Accompanied by her manager Claude Bryan, Campbell-Brown handed over cricket, football and netball gear to the principals of both institutions while imploring the youngsters to aim for the skies in everything they do.
She also handed over a full set of cooking and baking sets to the 4H club at Troy.
Despite rainy and cool conditions at both schools, the gifts were received with enthusiasm by both the staff and the students.
Campbell-Brown, the two-time Olympic 200m champion and former World Championships 100m gold medallist in 2007, was in the island to launch her book, 'A better you'.
She is a past student of Troy, while Bryan attended Bryce Primary.
Campbell-Brown who started training almost a month ago under new coach Anthony Carpenter said giving back is one of her passions. "I consider myself to be a very blessed person and with that it is always good to help when you can, and starting at home at my primary school is very good," she told Observer West during the Troy stop. "The younger kids are the future, the ones who will be lawyers and doctors and athletes of the future and this is a passion of mine to give back to help them achieve whatever they set their minds to," she added.
Campbell-Brown who has won 11 medals at senior international level has set her eyes on winning medals next year at the only major international event she has yet to attend, the IAAF World Indoors to be held in March in Doha, Qatar.
