UWI formalises ties with Racers, HPC

    BY PAUL BURROWES Observer writer

    Thursday, November 12, 2009

IN a bid to become a 'one-stop shop' for sports and a Centre of Excellence for the best athletes in the region, the University of the West Indies (UWI), Mona Campus, formalised ties with the Racers Track Club and the IAAF High Performance Centre (HPC) during a launch of its Athletics Initiative and Seminar Series at the Visitor's Lodge and Conference Centre yesterday.

Principal of UWI, Mona, Professor Gordon Shirley, put pen to paper with IAAF Area Representative Neville McCook and Racers Track Club president Glen Mills in the presence of Jamaican superstar Usain Bolt, who has been training at Mona for the past six years.

Deputy Principal Joseph Pereira, the public face of the campus, described the agreement as "basic", allowing members of the HPC and Racers use of the modernised and spacious facilities at the campus.

In turn, though not yet finalised, Mona will take advantage of the star power of Racers and the up-and-coming athletes of HPC.

Professor Shirley said Mona would commit "to providing accommodation for up to 15 international athletes annually for the High Performance Centre, office space as well as access to the training facilities at the Mona Bowl".

He noted that Racers Track Club "has decided to make UWI, Mona, its home base and has been given access to the facilities at the UWI Bowl where the incomparable Usain Bolt has trained for the past six years".

"Discussions are advanced in finalising installation of an eight-lane, 400m track at the facility, which Regupol of Germany donated to Bolt. The campus will be investing in the necessary infrastructure required for laying the track.

"With both Racers Track Club and the High Performance Centre based here, the Mona Campus will have top-flight athletes from Racers and the upcoming athletes from the High Performance Centre and their coaches enhancing the track exposure of UWI athletes and providing subjects for further research into track performance," said the professor.

Meanwhile McCook, a former president of the Jamaica Amateur Athletic Association (JAAA), said UWI would provide High Performance Centre athletes the space to train and finally take on female athletes.

Mills meanwhile described the occasion as "momentous" and "watershed", with facilities on the synthetic track making it possible for Racers athletes to "train longer and work harder".

He said Racers had the "best interest of Jamaica at heart" as the club expands and intensifies efforts to produce world-class athletes.
He said "huge announcements" from the club will be made soon.

Meanwhile, Olympian Grace Jackson has been reassigned from Director of Sports, Student Services, to Sports Development Officer in the Office of the Principal.

Jackson, a 200m silver medallist at the 1988 Olympics in Seoul, has secured sponsorships of US$70,000 from sport goods manufacturers Puma for laying the track; $1 million in cash and products from Gatorade, and $500,000 plus products from Western Union and Grace Foods, subsidiaries of GraceKennedy Ltd.

Ayama Kirton, Gatorade's brand manager, and Nicholas Bramwell, senior brand manager for Grace Foods, spoke on behalf of their companies.

Lecturer in sports medicine and consultant orthopaedic surgeon, Dr Askshai Mansingh, summarised the role of sports science at UWI, with Mona boasting doctors at the top of the field in injury assessment and management.

UWI bolsters sporting ranks - Racers, HPTC...

UWI bolsters sporting ranks - Racers, HPTC now official members of institution's team

A 20-year deal with the Racers Track Club and an agreement with the IAAF High Performance Training Centre (HPTC) are just a few of the steps being taken by officials at the University of the West Indies (UWI), Mona, as they move to pair sporting excellence with science and position the institution as the premier facilitator of sports development in the region.

It has been one year since the announcement of another major sporting initiative - the establishment of the Jamaica Football Federation (JFF) academy being adopted by the University - and things are beginning to take shape as plans include a massive expansion of the UWI Bowl.

    Mini stadium

Plans includes the construction of a mini stadium - to be built around the eight-lane synthetic 400m track given as a gift to Usain Bolt from German-based track specialist BSW-Regupol.

The track will be utilised by athletes from the UWI, Racers and HPTC, which recently moved their base from the neighbouring University of Technology for logistical reasons.

Plans also include the creation of an international standard indoor multi-purpose facility, beach volleyball courts, football fields, a sports science institute and pool expansion, along with the work being undertaken by the JFF for the establishment of their academy on the grounds.

Principal of the UWI, Mona, Professor Gordon Shirley, underlined the importance of the new direction and highlighted the importance to the development of the country's sporting directives.

Said Shirley: "What we are trying to do is to build a capacity for the development of athletes across the spectrum, from football to track and field and beyond, and we believe that in order to do that we need to have the right facilities, the right science behind it, the right medical facilities and the right management.

"There are other institutions in Jamaica that are doing an extremely good job and I'm proud to see what our colleagues at the University of Technology are doing and we, for our part, have excellent science facilities and some world-class doctors and we, want to put all of that together to create an environment where the athletes will have the kind of support needed to do well," he continued.

Glen Mills, president and head coach of the Racers, which has been utilising the UWI facilities since 2003, welcomed the initiative and believes that the partnership augurs well for Jamaica's track and field.

"We are happy to be a member of the UWI family, we are very grateful that they have taken us under their wings and have been taking care of us and making their facilities available," said Mills. "This is indeed a momentous occasion and a watershed moment in the life of Racers, in that we will now be able to have our own facilities to train on a synthetic track of world-class standards.

"We are very happy that we can contribute to the development of track and field in Jamaica," he continued.

    Great step

Sprint sensation and Racers top draw, triple Olympic and World gold medallist and world record holder Usain Bolt, was also on hand to endorse the developments.

"It's a great step for Jamaica on a whole to have one more track because of the overwork of the tracks at the Stadium," said Bolt. "It's a gift not just for the athletes and Racers Track Club, who will get full use of the track, but for other athletes who will definitely get to use these facilities," he said.

.....now UWI is clearly on the road to becoming the leading force for athletic development in not just Jamaica...but the Caribbean & Latin America..

Not a good week for UTECH....losing the High Performance Center??...and losing their bid for the Trelawny Stadium.....is it blowback from the mess & strife & oversized egos in track??

Is the Empire striking back??? Inquiring minds want to know.

      Investigatory reporting is in order.

Why such an adverserial tone , why not, say just rewards for the Racers program ?

Isnt competition healthy ? MVP has healthy competition from another camp and its in Jamaica , besides having Bolt whom else does the patriotic Mills have in his camp that can or has medaled for Jamaica compared to the mercenary Franno ?
THERE IS ONLY ONE ONANDI LOWE!

"Good things come out of the garrisons" after his daughter won the 100m Gold For Jamaica.

"It therefore is useless and pointless, unless it is for share malice and victimisation to arrest and charge a 92-year-old man for such a simple offence. Blowback?

I certainly hope not, as it would mean cutting off the nose to spite the face.

THE REAL blowback will be us getting what the DUCK get next Games if we dont provide good facilities for the camps that has brouught us by far the MOST medals in the last 5years!!!

          Tek sleep and mark death.

Who spoke of Francis here?...not me. You are way off base...mi nah get inna nuh more ah dat bankrupt kinda argument yuh ah bring come.

Yes...competition is good...the competition I refer to is UWI vs UTECH.

At the moment UWI has the advantage...with a decent athletic facility to be built, Racers basing there and now the HPC....a real coup.
On top of that the JFF Academy is to be sited there.

Big tings...combining academic and sporting development at the region's leading institution.

            Jamaica benefits...that's the main point.

I hope so as well...that these decisions have nothing to do with the strife.

The camp issue should be resolved to the mutual satisfaction of the parties...but that is entirely a separate & unrelated issue from this UWI development.

However life will not come to an end if Francis is not petted and powdered. lol!!

UWI is an infinitely more attractive environment to develop sports with a tie in to academic development....not even close.

I hope that within the unavoidable competition for scarce resources that all our instutions find the will to cooperate and assist each other's mission.

Jamaica can't afford destructive competition...we have seen what that results in nationally.
