    WIPA hits out at Hilaire

    Published: Tuesday | September 29, 2009

    ( L - R ) Hilaire, Gayle
    PORT-OF-SPAIN, Trinidad (CMC):
The West Indies Players' Association (WIPA) on Sunday tackled incoming West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) chief executive, Ernest Hilaire, over comments he made recently on the likelihood of Chris Gayle being re-installed as West Indies captain.

In an interview with the international cricket website Cricinfo this past week, Hilaire raised concerns about the West Indies captain - prior to the bitter WIPA/WICB dispute - being automatically reinstated as captain. WIPA says it views the comments with "utmost concern".

Scheduled to assume duties as WICB CEO on October 1, Hilaire pointed to comments attributed to Gayle that he is "not interested in playing Test cricket any more", and suggested that the hard-hitting Jamaican left-handed batsman be quizzed about his leadership ambitions.

"Dr Hilaire has not yet assumed the office of CEO but has made statements that some might consider disturbing as it relates to one of the most important positions in the fabric of Caribbean life: captain of the West Indies team," WIPA said in Sunday's press release.

"WIPA hopes that Dr Hilaire's comments are not meant to serve as groundwork for the eventual victimisation of Mr Gayle with regard to him being reinstalled as captain of the West Indies team - a position in which he performed with significant success during his almost two-year tenure," the WIPA statement declared.

"WIPA believes that his comments - whether representative of the WICB or personal - could well be considered prejudicial to the integrity of the selection process, and have the potential to impact on the process of the appointment of an individual to the important position of West Indies captain.
"The system which exists within the WICB whereby the selectors are appointed by the WICB and report to the chief operations officer, who functions under directives from the CEO, is relevant in this regard," WIPA stated.
"Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has."

more nonsense from the two parties! WICB supposed to be the "father" therefore they are supposed to set the example. premature statement by the soon to be in office CEO and petulant response from WIPA!
