  • The pitfalls of giving Bolt the OJ.

I didn't think it would come out.....I was hoping it wouldn't, but it has......

Bolt's utterances at the Digicel reception for him were hardly honourable.

Perhaps the government should rethink that particular award. He definitely deserves one but the OJ (and its attendant titles) suggests a different kind of commendation which might be inappropriate for his achievements thus far or for that matter his character at his present stage of development.

The criteria for OJ is..... The honour of the Order of Jamaica (OJ) may be conferred upon any Jamaican citizen of outstanding distinction or upon any distinguished citizen of a country other than Jamaica (honorary member). A member of the Order is styled "Honourable" and the motto of the Order is "For a covenant of the People".

The criteria for Order of Merit (which by the way is a higher Honour) is

"The honour of the Order of Merit (OM) may be conferred upon any citizen of Jamaica or distinguished citizen of a country other than Jamaica (an honorary member) who has achieved eminent international distinction in the field of science, the arts, literature or any other endeavor. It is not conferred upon more than two persons in any one year. the motto of the Order is "He that does truth comes into the light"

There is no question in my mind which one he should get........

    What did he say?

I do agree as well that giving him this award is way premature but for different reasons and it is unfair that we should hold one incident against him weighed against a body of work per se...

Bolt - 'a Gaza him seh'
      Monday Musings

      Monday, September 28, 2009
As the Gully/Gaza conflict between Mavado and Vybz Kartel rages on and supporters of each side get personal and at times confrontational, the fastest man on Planet Earth, Usain Bolt jumps into the fray. It had long been suspected that Bolt was a Gaza fan. However, he put all doubt to rest when he made his allegiance known last week at his welcome home party at the Quad night club in New Kingston.
At the end of what was reportedly a Gully segment, Bolt took the mic and announced, "A Gaza time now, and all who don't like that can jump inna the Gully."
BOLT... has officially been given the mega responsibility of 'Ambassador' and is soon to be decorated with one of the highest orders of the land
Undoubtedly, this was Bolt at play, but considering the sensitive and divisive nature of the confrontation between the two camps, and also considering that role model Bolt has officially been given the mega responsibility of 'Ambassador' and is soon to be decorated with one of the highest orders of the land, then the statement takes on a different level of irresponsibility.
Some would say that Bolt should be brokering peace and promoting unity between the two camps, but then again he is just a youngster, a dancehall aficiando, and a Kartel fan who was at the Quad, doing what he likes best. Bolt, without apology, is known as a party animal and his 'nuh linga' and 'no behaviour' dance moves on the world stage have only added to his lustre and distinction. And his endorsement of the Gaza within the walls of the Quad really isn't such a surprise; he was just being Usain, the dancehall fan, not 'Ambassador-at-large' Usain Bolt soon-to-be-OJ.
But, should he be allowed to leave all ambassadorial duties and other officialdom outside the doors of the Quad as he parties the night away and pick them out on his way out?

Sigh...unfortunate really and this is why some times we cant force people out of their environment but we should let them grow some more

It is really silly to give a young athlete the OJ. When he is retired from T&F, yes, but not while he is still an active athlete.

..and that to me is the biggest mistake in this entire scenario, what will happen if say he goes on to further lower his records and also set a new WR in the 400m and wins four golds in Lon don 2012, do we then just name the entire place Bolt land and get it over with and what award will they give him then National Hero????

Another silly decision by the government, not enough thought went in to this one

and it would look even sillier if they defer it now.

Asafa would have been a better choice.

unnu come on man. How many time mi a go hear unnu say a man is never honor in his time. They had to wait till the death of Marcus Garvey, Bob Marley, Paul Bogle etc. to give them honour.

Give the man the honor and make him deal with it. He deserves it. If Bolt don't deserve it then who else does?

There are many ways of honoring Bolt without those being dished out by the GOJ. I hear that the people in Sherwood are complaining about naming the highway after him. The GOJ could easily build a decent road into the town and name it after Bolt. Sherwood will inevitably become a tourist destination by the time Bolt is done with his career.

I totally disagree with you. Bolt is representing Jamaica and no honor in Jamaica is too high for him. How many times people get honored and end up go off track? People like "Sir Allan Sanford" and so many others.

what Bolt has achieve something to honor. Anybody can be honored by their own communities and parish council. The government of Jamaica need to honor him for his achievement. Again if Bolt don't deserve it for his accomplishment then nobody else does.

What age does he have to be?

A bit harsh. I think both points of view have merit. Yes he is quite young but at the same time in his young age he has accomplished what no other human being on the planet has accomplished. should he retire today based on his current accomplishments he would merit consideration.
