Hove
Sussex Sharks 254 v Nottinghamshire Outlaws 102 (D R Smith 6-29)
Sussex beat Nottinghamshire by 152 runs
All-rounder Dwayne Smith took four wickets in an over as Sussex Sharks took a huge step towards retaining the Pro40 Division One title at Hove.
Chasing 255 for victory, the West Indian reduced Nottinghamshire from 73-3 to 73-7 during a sensational quadruple-wicket maiden which included his first ever hat-trick.
Bilal Shafayat, Kevin O'Brien and debutant Jake Ball all fell in consecutive balls to prompt delirious celebrations from Smith, who was mobbed by his team-mates.
Smith finished with career-best figures of 7-2-29-6 to follow up his rapid 27 with the bat as the Outlaws spectacularly collapsed to 102 all out.
Late onslaught
The foundations for Sussex's par innings with the bat were set by an explosive opening partnership between Ed Joyce and Rory Hamilton-Brown.
The pair expertly exploited the powerplay with a 73-run stand off just 56 balls before Hamilton-Brown became Ball's maiden one-day wicket for a quickfire 49.
After a period of consolidation, the home side were pegged back when Adam Voges, released from Australia's one-day squad especially for this match, was introduced into the Notts attack.
The slow left-armer picked up the key wickets of Joyce (42), Murray Goodwin (39) and Smith (27) after young seamer Andy Carter had cleaned up Joel Gatting.
Voges' controlled spell reduced Sussex from 156-2 to 195-6; however, a late onslaught from Michael Yardy saw the Sharks up to a competitive 254 all out.
Style
The Nottinghamshire run-chase started promisingly with Akhil Patel, brother of team-mate Samit, and Alex Hales taking the score on to 67 after Wood had perished to Chad Keegan for just nine.
However, when Patel and Voges departed in the space of six balls, Smith then embarked on his fourth over to spark the most extravagant of collapses.
Hales was the first to go, the tall right-hander athletically caught down the leg-side by Andrew Hodd for a top-scoring 33.
Two dot balls followed before Smith had Shafayat caught at short fine-leg, O'Brien trapped lbw, and the 26-year-old finished off the over in style by clean bowling Ball.
From that point on there was simply no repairing the Outlaws innings and although Carter launched a mini-fightback with a towering six off returning leg-spinner Piyush Chawla, Sussex ran out clear winners.
The two-points gained means the Sharks extended their lead over second-placed Worcestershire to three points, although the Royals have one game in hand.
