BERLIN – Former World 100-metre champion Veronica Campbell-Brown, according to Jamaica’s technical director Donald Quarrie to the 12th IAAF World Championships, attacked the team management at their Saturday morning meeting.
Campbell-Brown, on Saturday, walked out on Jamaica’s team at the warm-up track after she was told she would not run the anchor leg on the women’s 4×100m team.
Although she was told a final decision would be taken after the semi-finals, Campbell-Brown, according to Quarrie was very forceful at the meeting.
"We didn’t even get a chance to speak, she just attacked us saying that she saw this coming and outside forces are influencing us to make our decision," explained Quarrie.
Quarrie, the 1976 Olympics 200m champion quoted Campbell-Brown saying: “Mr. Quarrie, I don’t care what you say when you come to me. I want to tell you now that even when you get to me my decision will not be changed. It will be the same. I will only run anchor.”

As to why they wanted Campbell-Brown on the third leg, Quarrie said the reason was explained to her at the meeting.
"We explained to her the situation with two of our athletes (Shelly-Ann Fraser and Kerron Stewart) who because of medical reasons could not run the curve but when we met with her she was very adamant about the fact that she will only run the anchor leg and that’s final," added Quarrie.
Even then, Quarrie said, "She let us know that she is only going to run the anchor leg and her decision is final!"
Campbell-Brown, on Saturday, said her decision not to run was because of a toe injury, which the curve would have affected.
Despite not having their most experienced runner, Campbell-Brown, on the 400m relay team Jamaica was able to win gold in 42.06 secs., over the Bahamas and host country Germany.
